NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team bounced Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1 (30-32, 32-30, 30-23, 30-24), Saturday afternoon at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the Southland Conference.
Sophomore Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) recorded four kills on five attempts (.880 attack percentage) in game one but it wasn't enough as the Ladyjacks fell 32-30. SFA returned the favor in game two, beating Southeastern Louisiana, 32-30. Senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) had another strong outing, recording 19 kills, 12 digs and five blocks leading SFA to a 30-23 win in game three. Senior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) added 15 kills. The Ladyjacks closed out the match in game four behind sophomore Joanna Benestante's (Houston, Texas) 18 kills and 20 digs.
Southeastern Louisiana was led Janelle Grovey's 13 kills. Teammate Denise Kubena tallied a match-high 28 digs.
Senior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) recorded a match-high 58 assists and had five block assists. Burton also finished the match with five assists. Sophomore Deborah Kirkham (Houston, Texas) led SFA with 24 digs.
"We did exactly what we needed to do this weekend," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "Picking up two wins here at home is big. We can't get caught up in the conference standings and what everyone else is doing, we have to stay focused on ourselves and our team goals. I thought we played a good match last night and today. It has been an intense week of practice, we need to take some time to rest and get ready for our upcoming matches."
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday Oct. 17, at Southwest Texas. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., in San Marcos, Texas
