Ladyjacks Survive Scare in Ruston Sophomore Joanna Benestante sets a career-high with 19 kills
RUSTON, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team backed themselves into a corner Tuesday before fighting their way to a victory over Louisiana Tech. SFA defeated the Lady Techsters, 3-2 (17-30, 26-30, 30-28, 30-20, 15-7). The Ladyjacks are now 10-7 overall.
The Ladyjacks stumbled out of the gate Tuesday night, hitting only .156 and having 28 attacks blocked by the Lady Techsters as SFA fell behind 2-0. But SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys said something at halftime that woke her team up as they fought back to win game three 30-28, feeding off sophomore Joanna Benestante's (Houston, Texas) career-high 19 kills and 16 digs. That energy carried over into game four as SFA tied the match with a 30-20 victory in the fourth game. SFA carried all the momentum into the fifth game as senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) helped finish off the Lady Techsters with her 18 kills and 13 digs.
Louisiana Tech was led by Cristine Sant'anna and her 14 kills and 10 digs.
"We just got off to an extremely slow start tonight," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "The encouraging thing is we found a way to get going in time and pulled out the victory."
The Ladyjacks return to league play Friday night when they travel to Arlington, Texas to take on the Mavericks. The match against Texas-Arlington is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from Texas Hall.
