Dan Bassett enters his sixth season as an assistant coach at SFA in 2018, primarily working with the defensive units. Bassett's main responsibilities include handling video analysis of opponents and assisting with the day-to-day aspects of the program.
In the 2017 season, Bassett's work with the defensive unit helped the Ladyjacks post one of the Southland's stoutest defenses, allowing a Southland-low eight goals in conference play and notching eight shutouts on the season. Despite not receiving any credit on the Southland All-Conference Team, senior defender Kennedy Rose was one of the most dynamic and effective backs in the league region and was named to the the USCAA All-Region Team under Bassett's tutelage, and joined teammate Carli Arthurs as a conference honorable mention.
In his first two seasons at SFA, Bassett helped lead the Ladyjacks to their best two-year period in school history with an .810 winning percentage (32-6-4). Each of Bassett's first three seasons at SFA ended with the Ladyjacks winning a Southland Conference Championship as part of five straight regular season titles for the program.
The Ladyjacks finished the 2014 season with a 16-3-1 overall record, including an unblemished 11-0 mark in Southland Conference play en route to an unprecedented fourth straight SLC regular season championship. Bassett was part of the coaching staff that led SFA to a program-record 14 consecutive wins heading into the SLC Tournament Championship – the longest winning streak in the nation over the stretch. As one of only five schools in the country to go undefeated in conference play, SFA also finished the season undefeated at home (8-0-0).
Working closely with the SFA back line and goalkeepers, Bassett turned the Ladyjacks into one of the best teams in the nation defensively in 2014. As a team, SFA finished the year ranked sixth in the country in shutout percentage (.650), seventh in save percentage (.876) and 11th in goals against average (.588). Senior goalkeeper Morgan Glick ended the year ranked fifth in the country in save percentage (.884) individually and was 12th in goals against average (.569).
Thanks in part to the guidance provided from Bassett over his two years at SFA, Glick, standout defender Megan Dunnigan and senior forward Chelsea Raymond signed professional contracts to continue their playing careers in Iceland following the 2014 season – becoming SFA’s first soccer players to turn pro.
In 2013, Bassett was part of the Ladyjack coaching staff that won the Southland Conference regular season title for the third consecutive season and posted an overall record of 16-3-3, setting a program record for most shutouts in a season with 14 and finishing the season ninth in the country in shutout percentage (.636) and 10th in goals-against average (.520).
Bassett, a native of Bulkington, England, came to Nacogdoches after spending three years as an assistant coach with the University of Nebraska women's soccer team. During that three-year stretch, the Huskers went 23-23-2 while members of the Big 12 and Big 10, which included a 13-7-1 campaign in 2010 in which Nebraska went 9-1-0 at home.
Bassett also spent three seasons as a volunteer coach for the Huskers (2005, 2006 and 2008). During that time, he also coached the Bellevue West High School boys and girls squads and played two seasons for Bellevue University, helping the Bruins compile a 25-12 record. Bassett served several roles while on the Husker support staff, including alumni relations, video operations and game day operations.
Bassett moved to the United States in 2004 and began his coaching career with club teams in Kansas City and Omaha. He earned an engineering degree from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in 2002. While in England, Bassett also spent time coaching the Coventry and Birmingham Women's Centers of Excellence.
