Jared May was promoted to Pass Game Coordinator for the Lumberjacks football program on March 18, 2024. He is entering his sixth season with SFA.
May was a huge part in coaching SFA quarterback Trae Self (2019-2022) in leading SFA to the NCAA FCS Playoffs in 2021 and then to the WAC Championship in 2022. It was the Lumberjack’s first postseason appearance since 2014 and their first conference title in football since 2010.
Trae was one of the top quarterbacks in conference play throughout his four years as a Lumberjack. He threw for four straight 2,000 yard seasons with his best season coming in 2021 with 3,201 yards and 28 touchdowns. Trae ranks third all-time for SFA in total offense, with his 10,972 total yards.
May has served as an assistant coach for the quarterbacks the past five seasons. Jared is also the Lumberjack’s punt return coordinator and helped the ‘Jacks lead the NCAA in punt return average (30.56) in the 2022 season. He joined the Lumberjacks football program in December of 2019 after serving in the same capacity for Texas A&M-Commerce from 2013-18. Along with coaching the Lions quarterbacks, he also served as the Co-Offensive Coordinator.
Prior to joining the Lions at Commerce, the Hamlin, Texas native coached three years at West Texas A&M as a wide receivers coach. He was also an assistant coach from 2008-09 for the Lumberjacks, after serving as a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons.
