Gary Crowton is in his second season as the Lumberjacks' offensive coordinator while also serving as SFA's quarterbacks coach.
With over 30 years of coaching under his belt, Crowton brings a wealth of knowledge and football experience, coaching at both the FBS and FCS levels along with the National Football League and Canadian Football League.
It is a reunion of sorts for both Conque and Crowton as the two previously worked together at Louisiana Tech from 1996-98 when Crowton served as the Bulldogs’ head coach and Conque filled the role of offensive coordinator.
During his first season in Nacogdoches, Crowton guided an offensive scheme that averaged 30.4 points and 438.1 yards per game. Working primarily with the Lumberjack quarterbacks, SFA averaged 292.5 passing yards per game as the senior duo of Zach Conque (2,201 yards) and Hunter Taylor (991 yards) combined for nearly 3,200 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in 2016. Each of them were honored with Southland Conference Player of the Week honors with Conque earning honorable mention All-SLC honors.
Prior to coming to Nacogdoches, Crowton spent one and a half seasons as the offensive coordinator at Southern Utah before spending the second half of the 2015 season as an offensive consultant at Oregon State. He helped engineer the Thunderbirds’ offensive attack which averaged 35 points and nearly 445 yards per game, capturing the 2015 Big Sky championship in the process.
The stint at Southern Utah continued a span of 10-straight seasons in which Crowton served as an offensive coordinator, including stops at Oregon (2005-06), LSU (2007-10), Maryland (2011) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL (2012-13).
During his time in Baton Rouge, Crowton helped lead the Tigers to the 2007 national championship, winning the SEC championship in the process, and helping mentor JaMarcus Russell, the top overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Working along side head coach Les Miles, LSU posted a 40-13 record during his four seasons in Baton Rouge as the Tigers won three bowl games during that span.
In his two years at Oregon, Crowton helped lead the Ducks to a 17-8 record, including a 10-2 mark in 2005 as Oregon finished 12th nationally.
From 2001-04, Crowton was the head coach at Brigham Young University, his alma mater, guiding the Cougars to a 26-23 overall record. Crowton’s best season came in 2001 as BYU went 12-2, including a perfect 7-0 record in Mountain West Conference play, earning MWC and District 8 Coach of the Year as the Cougars finished the season ranked 24th nationally. He oversaw an offense which produced the 2001 Doak Walker Award winner in running back Luke Staley.
Crowton’s time at BYU came after spending two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. The Bears ranked third in the NFL in passing yards per game in 1999, setting a then-franchise record in passing yards with 4,136.
Prior to his time with the Bears, Crowton spent four seasons at Louisiana Tech, the final three as head coach. The Bulldogs went 21-13 during his three seasons at the helm, including a 9-2 record in 1997, as LaTech led the nation in passing and was second in total offense in 1998 behind the arm of Heisman trophy candidate Tim Rattay.
Crowton spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech (1994), preceeded by a three-year stint as the quarterbacks coach at Boston College (1991-93) under head coach Tom Coughlin.
Beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant at BYU in 1982, Crowton served as a defensive backs coach at Snow College in 1983 before filling the role of offensive coordinator.
From 1984-90, Crowton served as the offensive coordinator at three different institutions, including Snow College (1984-86), Western Illinois (1987) and New Hampshire (1988-90). During his time at Snow, Crowton helped lead the Badgers to the 1985 NJCAA national championship, leading the nation in passing offense.
A native of Orem, Utah, Crowton earned his degree in physical education from BYU in 1983. Crowton is married to his wife, Maren, and the couple have seven children: daughters Tara, Jenessa, Mikauli and Toriana and sons Dane, Quinn and Macloud.
