Jurkin, Alvarado Named SLC Players of the Week

Jurkin earns first career weekly honor, Alvarado adds second
FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin football's Lowote Jurkin and Carlos Alvarado have been named Southland Conference Players of the Week following Week 1 action. Jurkin was awarded the league's defensive honor, while Alvarado received special teams recognition. Both players played key roles in the Lumberjacks' 44-7 win over East Texas A&M in the former's home opener.
Jurkin, a native of Pflugerville, delivered 1.5 sacks, a quarterback hurry, a pass break up and two tackles, while aiding the Lumberjack defense in holding the Lions to 187 total yards of offense with just 56 yards coming on 22 rushing attempts. SFA's pass rush helped generate three interceptions to run the defense's season total to five.
Alvarado's first PAT of the night moved him to the century mark in scoring as a Lumberjack. He added four more extra points in the victory, while also recording the second three-FG effort of this career with makes of 23, 37 and 26 to cap a 14-point night for the Venezuela native.
Alvarado previosly earned weekly acclaim from the league on November 17 of last season after his first career thre-FG game helped SFA beat Lamar for the SLC title.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.

The Lumberjacks hit the road out west for Abilene for a second-straight season. The two programs met twice last fall with the home team winning each contest including the Jacks' second round FCS playoff win over the Wildcats. Since 2019, when Carthel's Jacks first met Abilene Christian, seven of the nine meetings have been one possession games.
