Cameron Rogers enters his eighth season on the Stephen F. Austin football staff in 2026 and his first as co-defensive coordinator. Rogers, who will continue to coordinate the defensive run game and coach the Lumberjack linebackers, has been a member of head coach Colby Carthel’s staff since arriving in Nacogdoches in 2019.
Rogers’ promotion followed a historic 2025 campaign in which SFA finished 11-3, completed a perfect 8-0 run through the Southland Conference and captured the program’s fifth conference championship and first Southland title since 2010. The Lumberjacks earned the No. 7 national seed in the FCS playoffs and advanced to the national quarterfinals. SFA led the FCS in tackles for loss during the regular season while ranking second nationally in total defense and third-down defense, third in rushing defense and scoring defense, fourth in red-zone defense and seventh in sacks. Including postseason play, the Lumberjacks led the Southland in total defense and rushing defense and finished second in scoring defense and pass-efficiency defense.
Senior linebacker Jaydon Southard emerged as one of the nation’s top defenders under Rogers’ guidance. Southard earned First-Team All-Southland Conference and Stats Perform First-Team All-America honors and was named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the FCS national defensive player of the year. He led the Southland with 10.0 tackles per game during the regular season and became the first SFA defender since 2019 to record at least 100 tackles. Southard was named the Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week and Southland Defensive Player of the Week after recording 16 tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in SFA’s victory at UIW. The Lumberjack front seven also featured Aaron Austin, who earned First-Team All-Southland honors after receiving second-team recognition the previous season.
Building toward that championship run, SFA made significant defensive progress in 2024, finishing 7-5 and leading the Southland in scoring defense at 17.8 points allowed per game. The Lumberjacks ranked second in the conference in total defense, rushing defense and pass-efficiency defense while forcing 28 turnovers, the sixth-highest total in the FCS. Rogers’ linebackers accounted for seven of SFA’s 17 interceptions, while Josiah Cotton and Jermaine Brown finished first and second on the team in tackles. Austin earned Second-Team All-Southland honors after totaling 50 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 11 quarterback hurries. Following the season, Rogers was elevated to defensive run game coordinator.
The foundation for SFA’s defensive resurgence was strengthened in 2023. Brown led the Lumberjacks with 87 tackles and added 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four quarterback hurries. Luke Watson finished second on the team with 67 tackles and led the defense with 9.5 tackles for loss while contributing two sacks.
Rogers helped SFA claim the Western Athletic Conference championship in 2022. Brown earned Second-Team All-WAC honors, while the Lumberjack defense led the conference in third-down defense and takeaways and ranked second in total defense and rushing touchdowns allowed. SFA’s kickoff coverage unit also ranked third nationally in the FCS and first in the WAC according to Championship Analytics.
The Lumberjacks reached the FCS playoffs in 2021 after finishing 8-4. SFA ranked 15th nationally in total defense, third in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss while placing among the nation’s top 20 in scoring defense, rushing defense, pass-efficiency defense, third-down defense and turnovers gained. The Lumberjacks led the WAC in scoring defense, total defense, takeaways, sacks and opponent third-down percentage. Linebackers Brevin Randle and Bert Morris both earned First-Team All-WAC honors.
Rogers was elevated from defensive quality control to linebackers coach ahead of the 2020 season and immediately helped Randle earn Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors. SFA finished 6-4 while ranking second in the conference in scoring defense and total defense and leading the league in pass-efficiency defense, interceptions and takeaways.
Rogers originally joined SFA in 2019 as a defensive quality control assistant, working primarily with the linebackers while assisting with the program’s recruiting efforts. His relationship with Carthel dates to their time together at Texas A&M-Commerce, where Rogers was a member of Carthel’s first signing class.
Before arriving at SFA, Rogers spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons on the Texas A&M-Commerce coaching staff. He began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant responsible for the Sam linebackers, nickelbacks and long and short snappers. Rogers helped coach All-Lone Star Conference selections Mark Westbrook and Travon Blanchard as the Lions captured the 2017 NCAA Division II national championship. He continued in those roles in 2018 and worked with All-Lone Star Conference linebacker Jalen Edwards-Cooper, who went on to play professionally in the Canadian Football League.
As a player at Texas A&M-Commerce, Rogers was a four-year letter winner and a member of three consecutive Lone Star Conference championship teams from 2014-16. He became a starting middle linebacker as a true freshman and earned all-conference recognition four times between linebacker and deep snapper. Rogers completed his career with 132 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four interceptions, eight passes defended and two fumble recoveries in 45 games. A team captain as a senior, he received the J.V. Sykes Award for his contributions to the program.
A native of San Antonio, Rogers was a three-year starter at Brandeis High School. He recorded more than 250 tackles over his junior and senior seasons, earned first-team all-district recognition three times, was a two-time all-city selection and received second-team all-state honors as a senior. He also lettered twice in soccer.
Rogers graduated from Texas A&M-Commerce in 2017.
