SFA limited offensively as Colonels earn pivotal series sweep
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Nicholls earned a series sweep of Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon from Pilgrim's Park as the Colonels limited the Jacks to just three hits, while it took the visitors until the fifth inning to scratch runs against Lumberjack starter Dylan Mulcahy who finished with nine strikeouts.
Mulcahy went 5.2 innings facing seven over the minimum with three free passes issued. Both starting arms carried a one-hitter through four innings. A two-run homer by the Colonels in the fifth opened scoring on Sunday and an RBI double signaled the end to Mulcahy's day. Nicholls added a fourth run later in the sixth following the pitching change to Elian Balmaceda, but the latter limited the damage by stranding runners at the corners in the frame.
The Jacks threatened in the seventh with singles by Julian Swift and Mark Henning to lead off the frame. With two outs, Coby DeJesus was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, but the Colonels managed to exit the frame without any damage done by the Jacks. That accounted for half of the runners left on base by SFA in the series finale.
Nicholls' fifth run crossed with two outs in the eighth on a solo blast. Balmaceda finished with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief. Charlie Feris and Seanan Farney each recorded an out in the ninth.
