Colonels hand SFA just its second loss in an SLC series opener this season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin lost only its second Southland Conference series opener of the season on Friday night at Pilgrim's Park as visiting Nicholls beat the Jacks 9-4.
Cody Templeton (L, 4-1) went 6.1 innings and was in control until the sixth when the Colonels used five hits, including three doubles, to plate four runs and take a 4-2 lead.
The Jacks responded in the next half inning with an RBI single from Josh Ibe and a run-scoring groundout by Juan Cantua to tie the contest at 4-4. SFA had struck first in the contest with two runs in its first trip to the plate. RBI singles by Julian Swift and Juan Cantua accounted for the early support of Templeton.
After a sacrifice bunt moved a pair of Nicholls runners to second and third in the pre-stretch seventh, a two-run single gave the Colonels a lead they would not relinquish, with the visitors also adding three more runs in the ninth.
