Templeton Deals as Jacks Win Friday’s Opener with UTRGV
4/11/2026 12:17:00 AM | Baseball
A more than 90-minute weather delay not enough to dampen SFA’s efforts in series opener
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Cody Templeton delivered seven strong innings in Friday night's Southland Conference opener against UTRGV, and Stephen F. Austin generated seven runs cushioned by a three-run sixth to pick up a 7-2 victory from Pilgrim's Park. The win moves SFA to 19-16 on the season and the Jacks pick up a tenth SLC victory to keep pace near the top of the league standings.
A lightning delay that pushed back the original 6:05 start to 7:42 was not enough to distract the Jacks who saw seven of nine players in the starting lineup record a hit, while Templeton scattered three hits and shrugged away a two-run second to match his SFA career-high in strikeouts with nine.
Templeton worked 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth and fifth innings and used a 6-3 double play to make quick work of the visitors in the sixth.
SFA responded to UTRGV's two runs in the second with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom half as Cermodrick Bland was hit-by-pitch was the bags full to plate the Jacks' first tally before Jhett Creel drew a free pass to even the game at 2-2.
An 0-2 pitch to Juan Cantua in the bottom of the fifth inning was hit through the left side to score Mark Henning and give the Jacks a lead that they would not surrender. Bland added his second RBI of the night in the sixth as a base knock into center field scored Coby DeJesus, before two more runs scored on a single by Julian Swift, the first of which was an RBI, while an errant throw chased Creel home as the SFA lead blossomed to 6-2 through six.
The Jacks nearly took the lead in the fifth as a potential two-run blast by Ethan Peña out to deep left field was robbed to keep the contest even before Cantua's RBI single. Following the stretch, Josh Ibe doubled into deep centerfield to score Cantua from first.
Jack James worked the eighth and ninth innings in relief of Templeton. James received a 4-6-3 double play to end the Vaqueros' threat in the eighth and then used 11 pitches in the ninth to shut down UTRGV.
