Junior right-hander tosses 5.1 IP, strikes out nine; Swift triples in two in four-run third
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dylan Mulcahy delivered 5.1 innings of four-hit ball; while striking out a career-high nine batters, the most by any Jack this season, and allowing zero runs, Julian Swift registered his 12th multi-RBI game of the season with his two-run triple in the fourth inning, and the relief effort behind the former stood firm as Stephen F. Austin took the series over Houston Christian with a 5-2 victory in the series finale from Pilgrim's Park. SFA moves to 15-14 overall and wins its seventh SLC game of the season, while the Huskies fall to 5-7 in league play and 12-16 overall.
Mulcahy (W, 3-1) faced two dozen batters working around four hits and four walks. The right hander produced three ground ball outs and as many fly outs, while his ERA on the year lowered to 2.39.
Four arms followed Mulcahy with Elian Balmaceda out of the 'pen first. Balmaceda induced a 4-6-3 double to get out of a tight situation in immediate relief of Mulcahy in the sixth and then worked the next two frames allowing a single run on only two hits, while striking out two. Jonathan Valdez got the Jacks out of the eighth and was one of three arms to record an out in the ninth as Kadin Munson tossed 11 pitches before Brennan Greer ended the bases loaded threat (1 R, 3 H, 3 LOB) by fanning Levi Castilleja on a full-count offering to earn the save.
Swift supplied the game's first run as a sacrifice fly opened scoring in the bottom of the first with Cooper Schneider chased home after the second out of the inning was secured. The remaining four runs for the Jacks all crossed with two gone. Schneider delivered the first of two bunt singles by the Jacks in the third as his put a runner on with two outs. Jhett Creel walked to set the table for Swift who scored moments after his triple as Mark Henning's fourth blast of the season exited to right field for a 5-0 SFA lead.
