Jacks Split Day One at Roadrunner Classic

Ella Hill goes 4-5 with three homeruns and six RBIs.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team began their schedule at the Roadrunner Classic with UMass Lowell and Northern Colorado.
Game 1: SFA 7, UMass Lowell 4
UMass Lowell got on the board early with two runs in the first inning. SFA responded in the bottom of the second with a solo leadoff homerun for Kara Pride, 2-1. After a scoreless third inning, the River Hawks tacked on a run in the top of the fourth. The Lumberjacks scored two in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-RBI single from Jamie Varga, 3-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ellie Vance was hit by a pitch then Adelyn Becerra hit a single through the left side and Pride drew a walk to load up the bases for Ella Hill. Hill smashed a grand slam over the left field wall to give SFA a 7-3 lead. The River Hawks would score one in the seventh as they tried to mount a comeback, but Amelia Hatthorn shut the door on the UMass Lowell offense.
Game 2: UNC 8, SFA 7
Northern Colorado scored two in the first inning before SFA responded in the second inning with a solo homer from Hill, 2-1. After another scoreless third inning, the Bears scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, Malia Jones followed in Hill's footsteps and blasted a two-run homerun over the left field wall to cut the deficit to two, 5-3. UNC added another run in the fifth, 6-3. SFA matched that with a groundout RBI from Vance that scored Varga, 6-4. The Bears offense continued to push as they added two more in the bottom of the sixth, 8-4.
With their backs against the wall the Jacks began their comeback with a leadoff solo homerun from Hill, who recorded her third home run of the day. Pride then reached on an error before Gianna Lewis drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Jones grounded out. During Kaylee Paul's at bat, Pride scored on a wild pitch, 8-6. Paul eventually drew a walk which put runners on the corners with one out for Varga who hit a sacrifice fly to score Sammy Hagman, 8-7.
POSTGAME NOTES
• SFA splits day one of the Roadrunner class and will await the results of the rest of the games to get an idea of their seeding for tomorrow's matchups.
• Ella Hill led the team with four hits, three homeruns, and six RBIs.
• Kara Pride went 3-5 from the plate with four runs.
• Kai Hudson pitched 3.1 innings against UMass Lowell and allowed no runs while striking out three batters.
UP NEXT
SFA will play host UTSA tomorrow, Saturday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. After that game the teams will be seeded. The No. 1 and No. 4 seeds will face off at 3:30 p.m. and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds will follow at 6:00 p.m.
