Lumberjacks Split Doubleheader Against Tarleton

Jacks hand Texans their first loss of the season as Ellie Vance extends her hitting streak to 10 games.
STEPHENVILLE, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team finished up their slate at the Whataburger Invitational with a doubleheader against host Tarleton State.
Game 1: Tarleton 7, SFA 3
Tarleton got on the board early with one run in the first and two in the third, 3-0. The Texans continued to grow their lead in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning, 7-0. Jamie Varga got the Jacks comeback started with a leadoff single in the sixth inning. Lilly Bean scored Varga on an RBI double to right center. Kyi'Marri Ester followed with an RBI single down the right field line to score Alexis Grigsby who pinch ran for Bean, 7-2. In the top of the seventh, SFA looked to continue their comeback as Ella Hill hit a leadoff single to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Later, Ellie Vance continued her RBI streak with an RBI single down the left field line and recorded the final run of the game, 7-3.
Game 2: SFA 6, Tarleton 2
After a scoreless first inning, both offenses got on the board in the second. Bean drew a leadoff walk that was followed by Ester and Hill reaching base on an error. Grigsby scored her second run of the day on the throwing error by Tarleton, 1-0. Hill and Ester executed a double steal to scratch across the second run for the Jacks, 2-0. Kara Pride followed with an RBI single to left field, 3-0. After Varga drew a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs, Pride and Varga executed another double steal to get SFA's fourth run home, 4-0. The Texans responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, 4-2. The rest of the game became a pitcher's duel as both teams recorded four straight scoreless innings. In the top of the seventh, SFA scored two insurance runs with an RBI single from Vance to score Varga. Adelyn Becerra also scored on that play due to a throwing error from Tarleton, 6-2. Amelia Hatthorn was not fazed by the Texans as she induced two groundouts and a foul out to secure SFA's 6-2 win and hand Tarleton their first loss of the season.

• SFA finishes the weekend breaking a five-game losing streak.
• Ellie Vance has recorded a hit in all 10 games this season with seven of them being multi-hit games.
• Jamie Varga finished the day 3-5 with two walks and two runs.

The Lumberjacks will have their home opener on Wednesday, February 18 at 5:00 p.m. against Prairie View A&M. Then SFA will head to UTSA for the Roadrunner Classic next weekend.
