Jacks Drop First Two Games at Whataburger Invitational

STEPHENVILLE, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team faced South Dakota State and Colgate to begin the Whatburger Invitational hosted by Tarleton State.
Game 1: SDSU 9, SFA 7
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Jacks got on the board in the bottom of the second after an RBI double from Malia Jones scores Kyi'Marri Ester. Jones and Ella Hill attempted a double steal that got Jones across, 2-0. In the third inning, SFA extended their lead with an RBI single from Ellie Vance, 3-0. SDSU took the lead with a four-run top of the fifth, 4-3. The Lumberjacks responded in the bottom of the fifth with Vance's second RBI single then Jamie Varga scored on a passed ball, 5-4.
The Jackrabbit offense scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take a four-run lead, 9-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Jacks plated two as Morgan Wright drew a bases loaded walk and Lilly Bean hit a sacrifice fly to right field, 9-7.
Game 2: Colgate 5, SFA 4
SFA jumped on the board in the bottom of the first as Wright and Vance executed a double steal to bring in the first run. Bean followed with an RBI single up the middle to extend the Jacks lead, 2-0. Kara Pride drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the third run of the inning for the Lumberjacks.
After a scoreless second inning, Colgate got on the board with a five-run top of the third, 5-3. SFA scored in the bottom of the fifth after Malia Jones reached on a fielding error which scored Adelyn Becerra, 5-4. Colgate was able to stave off a SFA comeback and secure a 5-4 victory.
POSTGAME NOTES
• Reigning SLC Hitter of the Week, Ellie Vance went 6-8 from the plate with one run and two RBIs.
• Lilly Bean went 2-4 in the game against Colgate with one run and one RBI.
• Adelyn Becerra went 3-4 against Colgate with one run and one double.
• Kyi'Marri Ester went 2-3 against SDSU with one run and one double.
• Kaylee Paul was 2-3 with three runs in the game against SDSU.
• Amelia Hatthorn pitched 5.0 innings allowing three hits, one walk and struck out eight batters against Colgate.
UP NEXT
Due to anticipated rain, tomorrow will be a single game against South Dakota State at 2:00 p.m.
