Jacks Drop Extra Inning Thriller to Warhawks

MONROE, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team made a quick trip to Louisiana for a midweek matchup against the ULM Warhawks.
Both pitchers began the game with a three-up, three-down first inning. While the Lumberjacks were sat down in order in the second inning, the Warhawks got their first run on the board to take a 1-0 lead. The Jacks responded right away in the third as Malia Jones hit a leadoff double. After ULM recorded two outs, Jamie Varga brought in the first SFA run on an RBI double. Reigning Southland Hitter of the Week, Ellie Vance followed with another RBI double as the Jacks took a 2-1 lead after three innings.
In the fourth and fifth innings, both pitchers sat down opposing offenses in order. A solo home run from ULM tied the game up at two after six full innings. Seven innings was not enough as neither offense was able to scratch across another run in the seventh. The first two SFA batters reached in the eighth inning but were left stranded. SFA defended the bottom of the eighth and stranded three ULM runners. In the bottom of the ninth, the Warhawks were able to get the walk-off win on a fielder's choice and the ULM runner slid under the tag of the SFA catcher.
POSTGAME NOTES
• Five different Jacks recorded a hit in tonight's game.
• Jamie Varga recorded a run and an RBI.
• Ellie Vance recorded an RBI.
• Malia Jones recorded a run and drew a walk.
UP NEXT
SFA will head to the Whataburger Invitational hosted by Tarleton State this weekend. The Jacks will open the tournament with South Dakota State on Friday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. followed by Tarleton at 3:00 p.m.
