Sierra McCluer captures 10 saves, tying her career high in sixth shutout victory of her career.
EL PASO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer team defeated UTEP in a 1-0 match on Sunday, August 31, as Head Coach Ashley Whittemore earned her first career win.
Not too long after the 'Jacks kicked off for the last game of their four-game road journey, SFA was able to find a 1-0 lead three minutes into the match. Sawyer Kohutek launched a driving pass to Sydney Williams from the left wing to allow Williams to line up a shot, hitting the crossbar and going in for an early 1-0 lead for the Lumberjacks.
At the 63-minute mark, Zeta McDannels was awarded a penalty kick, allowing UTEP to break even with the 'Jacks. As McDannels took the kick, it was the swift thinking of Sierra McCluer to lunge out to make a diving save, protecting the 1-0 lead for SFA, and collecting her fifth save of the match.
The SFA defense was able to limit the UTEP scoring chances as the Miners collected 10 shots on goal with McCluer there to save every shot, tying her career high in saves in a game. McCluer showed aggression throughout the match, pushing the UTEP offense to challenge her with 26 shot opportunities, with the Miners unable to have a chance to capitalize. On offense, SFA only put one shot on goal, giving the 'Jacks the only goal in the match.
