NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Athletics officially dedicated the Debbie Humphreys Court at Shelton Gym on Saturday morning. The Debbie Humphreys Court will feature a Taraflex® playing surface, widely regarded as the top volleyball playing surface in the world.
"A volleyball program with such a storied history, a legendary coach and a tremendously bright future deserves the finest playing surface we can provide them," said Director of Athletics Michael McBroom. "The best surface in the world is now in Nacogdoches, and it will rightfully bear the name of one of the best volleyball coaches in the nation who has called SFA home for 37 years. What an honor for our current and future athletes to be able to play on this quality surface and to be coached by the one and only Debbie Humphreys."
Taraflex® is a state of the art playing surface that increases the safety and protection of athletes competing on the surface. The flooring has higher Shock Absorption than other flooring surfaces that prevents long-term injuries. Additionally, it ranks higher on the Impact Protection Index which reduces the risk of injuries when athletes fall, slide, or dive. It offers a 35 percent improvement in shock absorption over a traditional wooden court and a 73 percent improvement on the Impact Protection Index.
SFA is the only school in the Southland Conference with Taraflex® as their playing surface. Since 1976, Taraflex® has been selected to be the Olympic court for all volleyball matches. Taraflex® is home court for over 75 DI facilities and is the Official Championship Court for Men's and Women's NCAA DI Volleyball.
Installation of the court was made possible due to the generous support of Alan and Kim Jones, along with several alumni and volleyball supporters. "When we first started talking about upgrading Shelton Gym with this new surface, Alan and Kim were all-in. Their support for SFA is genuine and comes from the heart. We are so grateful that they shared in the vision to support the players and Coach Humphreys in this manner," said McBroom. The upcoming 2025 season will mark Humphreys' 38th year at the helm of Ladyjack Volleyball. She currently has the second most wins among active coaches with 846 and the only coach with at least 800 wins at one institution.
The 2025 season begins on August 29th. Season tickets will go on sale later this month.
