
Lumberjacks Fall to Cowboys on Senior Day

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (14-17, 7-13) fell at home to the McNeese State University Cowboys (25-6, 19-1) 95-64 on Monday evening in their regular season finale.
McNeese jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, however, SFA answered right back as an Ethan Mayes triple and a Chrishawn Christmas jumper for SFA got the 'Jacks on the board and tied the game at five points apiece. The first five minutes saw points continue to be traded between both sides as nine points from the Cowboys were responded with eight SFA points courtesy of a Myles Jenkins triple and five straight Matt Hayman points to tie the score at 14-14.
Both defenses started to settle in after the opening five minutes as the following five minutes leading up to the halfway point saw both teams combined for 11 points with McNeese holding a slim 20-19 lead at the midway point of the first half. A mini 5-0 SFA scoring run powered by a Matt Hayman triple and a Keon Thompson layup put the Lumberjacks in the lead 24-23 with nine minutes left in the half.
A 7-0 McNeese scoring run put them back in the lead 32-24, however, SFA would have a response with a 7-2 scoring run highlighted by a triple from Keith Lamar and baskets from Myles Jenkins and Matt Hayman to keep SFA to within two at 33-31. The Cowboys would extend their lead to 46-34. A Keith Lamar triple with a minute left in the half closed out scoring for the first half with McNeese holding a 46-37 halftime lead.
A Cowboys triple opened up scoring for the second half, before Keon Thompson and Chrishawn Christmas combined for four SFA points and kept the lead at 49-40 in favor of the Pokes. A 15-0 McNeese scoring run put them ahead 64-40 at the halfway point of the second half.
The Lumberjacks would start to chip away at the Cowboys lead as Keon Thompson would convert a pair of baskets to make the score 64-44 in favor of the Cowboys. McNeese would go back ahead 69-44, however, a 7-3 Lumberjacks scoring run thanks to six points from Keon Thompson brought SFA to within 72-51 with six minutes left in the game.
McNeese would go on a 10-0 scoring run to go ahead 84-53, with SFA receiving points from Keon Thompson, DaeVeon Scott, and two consecutive baskets from Ethan Mayes over the final five minutes, unfortunately it was not enough to overcome the Cowboys lead as the Lumberjacks fell 95-64 at home to close out the season.
