WACO, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (4-4, 0-0 SLC) hits the road for a midweek matchup as they travel to Waco for a clash with the Baylor University Bears (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) on Tuesday evening.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks will look to maintain their momentum from last weekend as they opened up their home slate for the season with a successful weekend homestand over the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff as the 'Jacks took care of business against the Golden Lions by completing a clean four-game sweep at home. The Lumberjack bats were hot despite the cold rainy weather as they scored 39 runs over the four-game series and totaled 51 hits, while showcasing excellent plate discipline as they drew 37 walks over the weekend. The Lumberjacks still had their fair share of late-game dramatics against the Golden Lions as two of the four wins came by way of walk-off wins. SFA now sets their sights on Baylor as they look to win their first game against the Bears in program history.
Bears at a Glance:
The Baylor Bears close out an eight-game homestand on Tuesday evening against SFA looking to continue their early season success. So far on the homestand, the Bears have compiled a 6-1 record with a three-game sweep over Youngstown State to start the season, a win over UTSA, and winning 2/3 over the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Bears will look to get back in the win column and end the homestand on a high note as they dropped a 10-inning extra-innings thriller to the Bulldogs in the series finale. The Bears will hit the road following the homestand finale against SFA as they travel to Arlington to compete in a top-tier weekend series that sees the Bears battle no. 8-ranked Oregon State, Ohio State, and no. 25-ranked Auburn.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
River Curs helped lead the SFA offensive assault against UAPB as he tallied eight hits in three games, recorded multiple hits in all three games, including a pair of three-hit performances, and scored six runs in the weekend sweep. Josh Ibe and Julian Swift both kept their bats hot to begin the season as both totaled six hits over the weekend series against the Golden Lions. Ibe clubbed his second homerun of the season in the second game of the series while stuffing the stat sheet as he totaled nine RBIs over the four-game series, including a five-RBI performance in the third game of the series. Swift was just as efficient with runners on base as he drove in six runs over the four-game series, which included a three-RBI performance in the home opener against the Golden Lions.
On the mound, Cody Templeton continues to dazzle as he followed up a six-inning outing against Purdue where he gave up zero earned runs, with a seven-inning nine-strikeout performance against the Golden Lions in the home opener for SFA. Dylan Mulcahy has formed a solid 1-2 punch with Templeton atop the SFA rotation as he has given up just one run over nine innings to begin his 2025 campaign, striking out eight Golden Lions his last time out.
Scouting Report-Bears:
Tyriq Kemp, Hunter Simmons, and Wesley Jordan have formed a terrific hitting trio for the Bears as all three own averages over .400, all three have over 10 hits to begin 2025, and all three have multiple extra-base hits and RBIs so far this season. Enzo Apodaca leads the Bears with nine RBIs, while five different Baylor hitters have hit a home run this year. Ethan Calder has been spectacular on the bump for Baylor as he owns a 0.75 era, allowing just one run over 12 innings and punching out 15 hitters.
Series:
Tuesday's midweek battle in Waco will feature the 33rd all-time meeting between these two Texas foes with Baylor leading the all-time series 32-0. These two schools met last season in Waco with the Bears coming out on top with a 17-4 victory.
