HOUSTON, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (14-15, 7-11) fell on the road to the Houston Christian Huskies (12-17, 9-9) by a final score of 72-56 on Monday evening.
The Huskies leaped out of the gate as they took an early 9-0 lead over SFA, before a Keon Thompson layup broke the ice for SFA and cut the HCU lead to 9-2. Following a Huskies basket, SFA would start to chip away the HCU lead as a Juhlawnei Stone layup followed up with a Matt Hayman triple cut the deficit to 11-7.
HCU would extend their lead back to 16-7, however, with five minutes gone in the first half SFA would find their stride as they would explode for an 8-0 scoring run thanks to points from Chrishawn Christmas, Keon Thompson, Nana Antwi-Boasiako, and Dominic Pangonis to cut the Huskies lead down to one at 16-15 midway through the opening half.
HCU would respond with a 7-0 scoring run to take a 23-15 lead, however, the Lumberjacks would once again have an answer to the Huskies offense as a 10-2 scoring run sparked by points from Matt Hayman, Myles Jenkins, and Chrishawn Christmas knotted the score at 25 points apiece with three minutes left in the half. Both defenses would lock in to end the half as the only other points scored by either side was a Bryson Dawkins triple for HCU to give them a 28-25 halftime lead.
SFA wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second half as a Juhlawnei Stone jumper on SFAs opening possession brought SFA to within one at 28-27. The opening five minutes offered heated back-and-forth scoring from both sides as points from Keon Thompson, Matt Hayman, Myles Jenkins, and Dominic Pangonis were canceled out by HCU as they held a 39-35 lead with five minutes gone in the half.
A 14-0 scoring run by the Huskies put them in the lead 55-35, however, SFA would not back down as a 5-0 scoring run thanks to points from Keon Thompson and Chrishawn Christmas brought SFA back to within 15 at 55-40.
The Lumberjacks would continue to try and chip away late as a 7-1 scoring run fueled by points from Matt Hayman, Chrishawn Christmas, and Keon Thompson brought the deficit down to 60-47 with three minutes left.
SFA would continue to inch closer as they followed that up with a 9-2 scoring run thanks to points from Keon Thompson, Chrishawn Christmas, and a triple from Thierno Sylla to bring SFA to within 10 at 66-56 with 90 seconds left. Unforunately for the Lumberjacks, they were unable to find the equalizing points over the final 90 seconds and eventually fell 72-56 on the road to the Huskies.
