Lumberjacks Comeback Falls Short Against Warhawks

MONROE, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (4-7) traveled to Monroe for the Battle on the Bayou tournament hosted by the Warhawks (4-7).

The Warhawks got an early jump with a three-run first inning. SFA got the top of the second inning started with a single from Ella Hill that shot past the shortstop and out to left field. Lilly Bean followed that with a long single up the middle that moved Hill over to third base. Chloe Reneau made her return to the lineup in a big way with an RBI single down the left field line, 3-1. After Jamie Varga reached on a fielder's choice to load up the bases, Kyi'Marri Ester smoked a single up the middle that scored Reneau and Alyssa Arnall to tie the game up at three.

ULM tacked on another run in the second, but SFA responded with an RBI groundout from Reneau, 4-4. The Warhawks added another two runs in the fourth, 6-4. SFA cut the deficit to one with another single from Hill that scored Hope Lusk, 6-5. In the bottom of the fifth, ULM added on another run to take a 7-5 lead before the Warhawk offense exploded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as they took a commanding 12-5 lead.

SFA began to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh after back-to-back singles from Bean and Reneau put two runners on for Malia Jones who reached base after a dropped fly ball by the left fielder that scored both runners, 12-7. Ester followed by with an RBI single that scored Jones from second, 12-8. Sadly the 'Jacks comeback ended there as the Warhawks won the first game of the Battle on the Bayou, 12-8.

• Hope Lusk: 2-4, one run

The 'Jacks will be back in action tomorrow, February 21st against Eastern Illinois at 11:00 a.m. before taking on ULM again at 4:00 p.m.
