
Lumberjacks Split Day Two at Bobcat Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (3-5) faced off against Fordham (1-5) and a rematch against host Texas State (4-2) on day two of the Bobcat Tournament.
Game 1:
Brooke Gainous earned the start in the circle for the 'Jacks and was magnificent through three innings only allowing three hits. Fordham did strike first with two runs in the top of the fourth, 2-0. SFA responded in the bottom of the fourth after a single from Hope Lusk followed by a home run from Gabby Coffey tied the game up at two. The scoring did not stop there as Jamie Varga reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second and after a couple of errors by the Fordham defense allowed Varga to score, 3-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, the 'Jacks started out hot with a leadoff double from Sydney Blakeman followed by a single from Kaylee Paul that put runners on the corners. Mikaelah Burkland stepped up to the box and hit a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Blakeman to score, 4-2. Fordham scored two in the top of the seventh and the 'Jacks were unable to walk-off the game in the bottom of the seventh, 4-4. In the eighth inning, Kaylee Paul was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt from Burkland. Ellie Vance, who is no stranger to walk-offs, had another fantastic moment as she singled up the middle to score Paul, 5-4.

Game 2:
In the second game against Texas State, SFA got the first runs of the game across in the third. Blakeman drew a walk that was followed by a triple from Paul to bring in the first run. Lusk stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Paul to score from third, 2-0. Texas State responded back in a big way in the bottom of the third with a seven-run inning and added to it with four more runs in the fourth to enact the run rule after the 'Jacks could not plate any runs in the top of the fifth.

The 'Jacks will be back in action tomorrow, February 15h at 10:00 a.m. for a rematch against Fordham followed by St. Thomas at 12:15 p.m.
