‘Jacks Meet Sam Houston in Battle of the Piney Woods Exhibition

Two longtime rivals meet on hardwood for first time since 2022-23
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The stage is set for the final preseason tune-up for Stephen F. Austin men's basketball as the 'Jacks travel to Houston for a Battle of the Piney Woods exhibition against longtime foe Sam Houston State on Saturday. Tip-off from inside Delmar Fieldhouse of the Houston Independent School District is set for 6 p.m. No live stats or watch links will be available for the exhibition, but digital tickets (non-refundable) remain and can be purchased here.
While Saturday's action won't officially count, the two sides have played in many that have. SFA leads the all-time series against the Bearkats 108-91 in a series that was first contested in 1925.
SFA returns two players from last year's squad in senior guard Keon Thompson and classmate combo Chrishawn Christmas. Thompson enters year two in Nacogdoches, while Christmas readies for year three as a Lumberjack. Thirteen newcomers, made up of three true freshmen and ten transfers across multiple levels of college basketball, fill out the roster for first-year head coach Matt Braeuer who became the 20th leader of SFA's men's basketball program on March 7.
2025-26 Lumberjack Men's Basketball Roster
Sam Houston is led by third-year head coach Chris Mudge. The Bearkats are coming off a 13-19 season with a 6-12 mark in CUSA action. SHSU features a roster with five freshmen, five sophomores and five upperclassmen including a trio of graduate student-athletes. The Bearkats aim to replace their top three scorers from a season ago.
SLC VIRTUAL MEDIA DAY
Head coach Matt Braeuer and senior guard Keon Thompson will join Field of 68 at 9:10 a.m. on Monday, October 27 as part of the SLC's Virtual Media Day. The interview can be viewed live here as well as on-demand following the conclusion of the day's events.
ISD FIELD TRIP DAY
The 'Jacks tip off the 2025-26 season opener at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 3 as part of an ISD Field Trip Day doubleheader that also features the Ladyjacks in action at 11 a.m. The Lumberjacks take on Millsaps College in the opening game of the Matt Braeuer Era of SFA men's basketball.

CBS Sports announced a slate of five Southland Conference men's basketball matchups that will be featured on the network this coming season and among the showcased contests is a January 26 matchup between the 'Jacks and cross-border rival Northwestern State inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
