Lumberjacks Tame Bears in Saturday Night Showdown

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-2, 0-1 SLC) defeated the Northern Colorado Bears (0-4, 0-0 BSC) Saturday night on Parents Weekend in Nacogdoches, Texas by a final score of 48-7.
The Lumberjacks struck first as Sam Vidlak found Kylon Harris for a 20-yard touchdown pass to give the 'Jacks an early 7-0 lead. Harris' 20-yard reception put him over the 1,000-career receiving yard mark. Qualan Jones also reached the 1,000-career yard rushing mark with his 24 rushing yards in the 'Jacks first drive.
The Lumberjacks then struck again to extend their lead as Jerrell Wimbley pounded it in from one yard out to put the 'Jacks up 14-0 with 4:25 to go in the first quarter.
SFA then extended their lead again on the first play of the second quarter as Sam Vidlak connected with Jordan Nabors for a nine-yard completion and his second passing touchdown of the night to put the 'Jacks up 21-0.
Jerrell Wimbley then punched in his second rushing touchdown of the night from two yards out to put the extend the Lumberjacks lead 28-0 with 9:23 to go in the second quarter.
After a muffed punt set the Bears up at the Lumberjacks nine-yard line, the Lumberjacks defense stood tall holding the Bears offense to a 41-yard field goal try which was missed. With 1:46 to go in the second quarter the Lumberjacks still led 28-0.
The Lumberjacks then mounted a seven play, 76-yard drive capped off as Sam Vidlak connected with Rohan Fluellen for his third passing touchdown to extend their lead yet again. With 42 seconds to go in the second quarter, the 'Jacks led 35-0.
Sam Vidlak finished the first half 15-for-24 passing with 210 yards and three touchdowns all to different receivers. Qualan Jones ended the first half with 10 rushes for 79 yards and Blaine Green ended with six receptions for 84 yards. Josiah Cotton ended the first half with seven tackles and one tackle for loss. The Lumberjacks defense stood tall in the first half holding the Bears' offense to -8 passing yards and 107 total yards.
Northern Colorado opened the second half with a four play 75-yard scoring drive to cut into the Lumberjacks lead. With 13:23 to go in the third quarter the Lumberjacks led 35-7.
After both teams were forced to punt, Jaylen Jenkins gashed the Northern Colorado defense for a 72-yard rushing touchdown on his first carry of the night to extend the Lumberjacks lead, 42-7. Jenkins 72-yard rush was the longest rush so far of the year for the Lumberjacks and the 12th longest in Lumberjack history.
After defensive stands by both teams to end the third quarter the Lumberjacks led 42-7.
Chris Campos extended the Lumberjacks lead with 12:17 remaining in the four quarter with his 72nd career field goal from 23-yards out, 45-7. Campos then extended the Lumberjacks lead again with a 34-yard field goal to put the 'Jacks up 48-7 with 5:34 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Campos field goal capped off the scoring for both teams and the Lumberjacks won the game in dominate fashion.
The Lumberjacks will have a bye week next week but will return to action for the second game of a two-game home stand against Northwestern State University on October 5th at 7:00 P.M. CT.
