DALLAS, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (0-1-2, 0-0-0) dropped the final game of their season-opening three-game road trip as they were defeated by the SMU Mustangs (3-1-0, 0-0-0) 3-2 in a late Sunday evening game.
The Mustangs, in the midst of a nine-game home stand to begin their 2024 season, jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes. However, the Lumberjacks refused to go down without a fight as in the 41st minute, freshman defender Sawyer Kohutek would find sophomore Ava Shannon off a centering pass that allowed Shannon to fire a missile from the penalty arc that found its way into the back of the net and cut the SMU lead in half at 2-1. That score would stand until halftime, as the Mustangs would score one more time out of the half in the 49th minute to take a 3-1 lead. However, the 'Jacks played to the final whistle as they kept up the offensive pressure late as Ava Shannon would net her second goal of the game, this one from even farther out than her first goal as she buried a shot from beyond the penalty arc in the 90th minute to bring SFA to within one at 3-2. However, the Lumberjacks were unable to find the equalizer as the Mustangs held on for a 3-2 home win.
The Lumberjacks continue to keep a steady consistent offensive presence on their opponents to begin the season as they totaled their third straight game with at least 10 shots as a team as they out shot the Mustangs 12-8. Maddie Bowers, Brielle Buchanan, Alex Bayouth, and Ava Shannon were active offensively for SFA tonight as each recorded two shots to tie for the team lead, while Ava Shannon, Lily Hargrove, Cassidy Hoang, Alex Bayouth, and Ella Morgan all recorded shots on goal for SFA. Shannon secured her first multi-goal game of her collegiate career with goals in the 41st and 90th minutes for SFA as well as her first career brace, while Sawyer Kohutek picked up both her first career collegiate assist and her first career collegiate point on the first Shannon goal. Lydia Sattler recorded three saves in net for SFA, while Sattler, Kohutek, and Ella Morgan all played the full 90 minutes for the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjacks return home next week for their 2024 home opener as they will play host to the visiting UTEP Miners on Wednesday, August 28th. Kick-off for Wednesday's home opener is set for 7:15 p.m. CST. You can watch all the action on ESPN+, as well as follow along on the SFA Soccer social media accounts for all the game updates.
