Lumberjacks Split Double Header with Trailblazers

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks split the Saturday double header with the Utah Tech Trailblazers today losing the first game and winning the second.
Game 1
The Trailblazers got the scoring started in the first inning scoring six runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead over the Lumberjacks. SFA was held scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the third inning with the bases loaded and one out Peyton Parker reached on a fielder's choice to the third baseman scoring Sam Adams and getting the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard. After three complete innings Utah Tech led 6-1.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning until Utah Tech extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Trailblazers were able to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-1. The Lumberjacks quickly responded in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring one run after Tom Biggs singled through the right side to drive in Brock Knoerr. After six complete innings the Trailblazers still led 8-2.
In the top of the eighth inning Utah Tech struck for two more runs to extend their lead again, 10-2. The Lumberjacks were held scoreless after the bottom of the sixth inning and the Trailblazers took game one in the series.
Evan Vasiliou (4-5) took the win on the mound for the Trailblazers and Will Larson (0-3) took the loss for the Lumberjacks. Ky Decker also picked up his first save of the year for the Trailblazers.
Game 2
Utah Tech got the scoring started early again in the top of the first inning plating two runs to lead 2-0. SFA was held scorless in the bottom of the first inning but were able to respond in the bottom of the second inning. Cal Martin led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle and was quickly followed by Tyree Carr after the laced a single down the right field line advancing Cal Martin to second. Tom Biggs stepped up to the plate with two outs and singled to the second baseman to score Cal Martin and the Lumberjacks cut into the lead, 2-1.
Utah Tech was able to strike again in the top of the fourth inning scoring one run and extended their lead, 3-1. The Lumberjacks wouldn't go away quietly as they struck in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cole Hill got the inning started with a single to the short stop then advanced to second thanks to a throwing error by the short stop. Colton Griffin then came to the plate and singled through the right-side scoring Hill and cutting into the Trailblazers lead, 3-2. Cal Martin came to the plate with one runner on and blasted his fifth home run of the year over the left field wall to score two runs and reclaim the lead over the Trailblazers, 4-3. Tyree Carr then came to the plate one batter later and followed Martin's lead hitting his second home run over the right field wall to put the 'Jacks up 5-3.
In the top of the sixth inning the Lumberjacks extended their lead after Colton Griffin doubled to right field scoring Peyton Parker, 6-3. Brock Knoerr then reached on an error by the third baseman allowing Cole Hill and Colton Griffin to score and the Lumberjacks tacked on, 8-3. The Lumberjacks extended their lead once again in the bottom of the seventh inning after Cole Hill flied out to right field to score Hunter Prescher, 9-3. Colton Griffin then tripled to left center field scoring Cody Fleischer and Peyton Parker, 11-3. Colton Griffin then capped off the scoring coming into score thanks to a wild pitch. After seven complete innings the Lumberjacks led 12-3. Utah Tech was able to scratch across one run in the top of the ninth inning but came up short and the Lumberjacks took game two of the doubleheader by a final score of 12-4.
Kade Parker (2-2) took the win on the mound for the Lumberjacks and Aaron Morris (1-1) took the loss for the Trailblazers.
The Lumberjacks will return to action tomorrow Sunday, May 5th, for a rubber match with the Trailblazers. First pitch is set for 12:00 P.M. CST. The baseball team will also honor the seniors pregame and will also have postgame festivities.
