Lumberjacks Comeback Bid Falls Just Short in Rubber Match Against Hornets
5/12/2024 6:00:00 PM | Baseball
The Lumberjacks would get the scoring started again in this one as Cole Hill would draw a leadoff walk and come around to score on a Colton Griffin RBI double to put SFA ahead 1-0 early in the first. The Hornets would respond with eight runs in the bottom of the first to hold an 8-1 lead heading to the second. Sacramento State would add a run in the bottom of the third and the fourth to hold a 10-1 lead heading to the fifth inning. The Lumberjacks wouldn't go down without a fight, however, as in the fifth inning Tyree Carr and Sam Adams both reached base allowing Cole Hill to step in and launch his eighth home run of the season to left center to make the score 10-4 Hornets. The Lumberjacks wouldn't be done in the fifth as Colton Griffin and Peyton Parker would also both reach base, allowing Cal Martin to dump a single into left field to score Griffin and cut the Sacramento State lead to five at 10-5. SFA would add one more run in the fifth off a wild pitch that allowed Parker to score from third and the 'Jacks trailed 10-6 after five full innings.
The top of the sixth saw Tyree Carr and Cole Hill both single, allowing Colton Griffin to line the Lumberjacks third single of the inning into left field to score Carr from third and cut the Hornets lead to 10-7 after six full innings. SFA would keep momentum on their side in the top of the seventh as following a Peyton Parker walk, Cal Martin would crush his seventh home run of the season over the left field wall to trim the Hornets lead down to a single run at 10-9 after seven full innings. Sacramento State would add on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-9 lead, which they would not relinquish in an eventual 11-9 win over SFA in the series finale.
Colton Griffin (3-5, R, 2 RBI, 2 2B) continued his strong weekend of hitting as he tallied three hits, and two doubles, while driving in a pair of runners. Cole Hill (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR) and Cal Martin (3-5, R, 3 RBI, HR) continue to show off their power as both recorded their second straight game with a home run for SFA while each drove in three runs apiece. Meanwhile, Sam Adams (2-3, R) rounded out the top hitters for SFA as he recorded a pair of singles while drawing the start behind the plate.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next weekend for their final series of the season when they travel to sister town Natchitoches to square off in a three-game weekend series with the Northwestern State University Demons. First pitch for the series opener is set for Thursday, May 16th at 6:30 p.m. CST. You can watch all the action on ESPN+ as well as follow along with all the action on social media or with live stats through the SFA Athletics website.
