ARLINGTON, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin's Softball Team (11-29, 4-8) will hit the road for a midweek matchup against the host UTA Mavericks (14-24, 5-6) for a Wednesday evening doubleheader.
Last Weekend at a Glance for SFA:
The Lumberjacks will enter the UTA match coming off a highly successful weekend that saw them claim their first series win of the season as they took two of three games from the visiting Tarleton State Texans thanks to back-to-back walk-offs in the Saturday afternoon series finale doubleheader.
Heating up with the Weather:
Lexi Benson has been on a tear at the plate recently as she will carry a five-game hitting streak into this midweek matchup that has seen her score five runs and record two RBIs during the hitting streak, while reaching base safely in 10 of her last 11 contests. Ellie Vance has been hitting the cover off the ball recently as well for SFA as she will carry a six-game hitting streak into Arlington, providing the walk-off winner in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday, while also reaching base safely in 10 of her last 11 contests. Mikaelah Burkland has quietly been just as effective hitting for SFA as she ended the weekend on a three-game hitting streak and has reached in five of her last six games.
Defensive Wins Games:
The Lumberjack defense came up in a big way against Tarleton in game one of the doubleheader in a game that saw 11 innings played for a total of over 2.5 hours of game time. In the top of the eighth inning with runners on first and second for Tarleton, Ellie Vance made a diving stop to knock down a ball hit towards the right side of the infield, and was able to gather the ball and throw the runner out at first all while sitting down to end the top of the eighth and keep the game tied at one. The top of the ninth featured another SFA infielder making another superb defensive play as Chloe Reneau made a diving stop of her own on a groundball headed up the middle and threw the runner out from her knees to end the top of the ninth. The top of the 10th saw the SFA outfield get into the defensive action as Madison Nguyen caught a flyball in left field, and proceeded to throw a dart home to Emily Land who proceeded to apply the tag on the advancing Tarleton runner coming home from third to turn a nifty 7-2 double play and get SFA out of the top of the 10th inning and keep the score tied at one run apiece. The top of the 11th saw Ellie Vance make another gold-glove caliber play from second base as she would make another diving stop on another ball headed for right field and threw the runner out at first from her knees to strand a runner at third for the Texans and keep the game 1-1 heading to the bottom of the 11th.
Pineywoods' Pesky Pitching:
The 'Jacks pitching staff continues to stymie opposing offenses as they allowed two or fewer runs in two of the three games this past weekend against Tarleton. Aydenne Brown continues to be a dominant force in the circle at home for SFA as she has allowed two or less runs in six of her seven home starts this season. Brown continued her strong first season in the purple and white for SFA as she is coming off perhaps her most impressive start of the season. Brown ended the first game of the doubleheader throwing an unbelievable 10 innings, allowing just one run and striking out six hitters, while throwing a jaw-dropping 155 pitches in the win. Brooke Gainous followed suit of Brown in game two of the doubleheader as she pitched all seven innings, allowing just two runs and issuing just a single walk, while striking out five to secure her third win of the season. Gainous has been cruising in the circle for SFA lately as she has allowed two or less runs in four of her last five starts. However, don't forget about Alexis Telford who has been a true workhorse for the Lumberjacks this season thanks to her dual-threat ability. Telford has thrown 81 innings this season and has struck out 47 hitters, however, her ability to play first base and be a valuable bat in the lineup is unmatched as she has recorded eight RBIs, two doubles, and a homerun at the plate this season.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
Madison Nguyen was a catcher's worst nightmare this past Saturday as she stole four bases over the three-game weekend series against Tarleton including a three-stolen base performance in the series finale against the Texans. Nguyen has been impossible to throw out on the basepaths, literally, as she is a perfect 8-8 on stolen bases this season. Mallory Webb showed off her speed as well as she stole her sixth base of the season in the series finale win over Tarleton, while Ellie Vance has helped form a three-headed monster for SFA on the basepaths as she has stolen five bases of her own this season. Lexi Benson, Chloe Reneau, and Kaylee Paul have been just as much of a headache for opposing defenses this season as each one has three stolen bases on the year, while Ja'Aira Fletcher and Brittany Coe each have a stolen base of their own on the campaign. As a team, the Lumberjacks have stolen 30 bases as a team good for fourth most in the WAC currently.
Comfortable in Conference:
Ellie Vance, Lexi Benson, and Madison Nguyen have formed a terrific trio for the SFA offense so far in conference play as they have each recorded at least 10 hits so far in conference. Lexi Benson leads the group with 11 hits in conference, while totaling 15 total bases and scoring six runs thanks to a pair of triples so far. Madison Nguyen and Ellie Vance both have recorded 10 hits in conference play, while also combining for five RBIs, seven runs scored, and 36 putouts and 14 assists defensively with no errors committed by either. Alexis Telford has been a clutch hitter for SFA during conference games as she leads the team in RBIs with five in conference play so far. Aydenne Brown has been equally dominant from a pitching perspective in conference play this season as she holds a sparkling 1.89 era in four starts in the circle, while limiting WAC hitters to just a .206 batting average against.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Emily Land has been a force to be reckoned with in the SFA lineup as she leads the Lumberjacks with a solid .328 batting average while also leading the team in doubles with five this season and tying Lexi Benson for the team lead in RBIs with an even dozen on the year. Ellie Vance has been a nuisance for opposing pitchers this season as she has struck out just three times in 39 games this season, while Madison Nguyen has been a hitting machine for SFA as she has totaled 36 hits this season to lead all 'Jacks. Meanwhile, Lexi Benson has been a do-it-all hitter for SFA this season as she leads the team in ops (.814), slugging percentage (.430), walks (16), total bases (40), and triples (six). Benson's six triples this season have her tied for the most in the nation, while she has also added three doubles to her hitting on the year. Defensively, Alex Dubose has been fabulous all season as she leads the team in putouts with an impressive 106, while Chloe Reneau and Ellie Vance have formed a dynamic middle infield duo for SFA as they have combined for 97 assists this season.
Mavericks at a Glance:
The UTA Mavericks will enter this midweek doubleheader against the Lumberjacks looking to get back in the win column and snap a four-game losing skid. The Mavericks have been tough to beat at home this season as they hold a 10-7 home record this season, and have faced a gauntlet of a schedule this season that has pitted them against Oklahoma, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Texas. The Mavericks are led by Head Coach Kara Dill who is in her second season leading the Mavericks after she accepted the head coach position at UTA following six years at Texas A&M where she was an assistant coach of the Aggies softball program.
Camille Corona has been racking up the hits for the Mavericks this season as she leads the team with her .406 batting average, as well as leading the team in hits with 43 this season, and leading the team in stolen bases with six. Lindsey Franklin has been an effective hitter for UTA this season as she has crushed a team-high five homeruns, leads the team in RBIs with 27, and owns a .361/.991/.556 slash line this season. Marley Neises has shown just as much power as Franklin this season as she has hit four homeruns of her own, while Kaitlyn Sailor is second on the team in RBIs with 18.
The Mavericks have a variety of pitchers they like to use in games as four different pitchers on their staff have thrown over 40 innings this season. Jessica Adams has been the ace of the Mavericks pitching staff this season as she holds a 3.10 era on the year, appearing in 20 games, while tossing four complete games in 67.2 innings. Abi Gutierrez has issued just 15 walks in 55.2 innings for UTA this season, while Gracie Bumpurs has struck out a team-leading 29 hitters this season. Jade Moreno rounds out the UTA pitching staff as she holds a 3-4 record on the year in 43.2 innings pitched.
Storied History Continues:
The opening game of the doubleheader on Wednesday will mark the 100th game these two schools have played against each other in both schools storied histories. So far in the iconic series history between the two schools, UTA leads the series 58-41. SFA has won the last two meetings with the most recent game seeing SFA win their opening game of the WAC Tournament 6-5 over the Mavericks in an extra-innings walkoff thriller in Phoenix, Arizona.
