
‘Jacks Drop First Two in Central Arkansas Invite

CONWAY, AR. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (5-18, 0-0) played the first two games of the Central Arkansas Invite this weekend. The University of Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (12-12, 0-0) took game one of the Invite by a score of a 11-0, while the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears (7-14) defended their home field by taking game two 5-1 over SFA.
Game 1: University of Louisiana 11, SFA 0
SFA's first game of the Central Arkansas Invite saw them pitted against the University of Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns with Alexis Telford drawing the start in the circle for SFA and Sam Landry for the Ragin' Cajuns. The first two innings offered a pitchers duel that saw neither team score a run with the game knotted at zero heading to the third. The Ragin' Cajuns, however, would open up scoring with a big third inning that saw them score seven runs and take a 7-0 lead after the third. The fourth inning saw University of Louisiana tack on four more runs and institute the run rule after five innings with the Ragin' Cajuns claiming an 11-0 win over SFA.
Amiah Galcatcher (1-2, 2B) hit her first double of the season in the top of the fifth, while Alexis Telford pitched 2.1 innings for SFA and Kayla Palomino threw 1.2 innings of relief. Emily Land and Kaylee Paul formed a dynamic defensive duo with each recording a team-high three putouts apiece, while Ellie Vance and Lexi Benson each had a pair of putouts. Meanwhile, Kelby Robbins, Chloe Reneau, and Alexis Telford all recorded assists defensively for SFA.
Game 2: UCA 5, SFA 1
The second game of the opening day doubleheader for SFA saw the Lumberjacks square off with the hosts Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas, with Brooke Gainous drawing the start on the bump for SFA, and Bailie Runner for the Sugar Bears.
The Sugar Bears got the scoring started early as they took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of a sacrifice fly. The Sugar Bears would add on another run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, before tacking on an additional three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. However, the Lumberjacks would put up a valiant effort to comeback in the top of the seventh as Alexis Telford and Lexi Benson would hit back-to-back singles to begin the top of the seventh. After Chloe Reneau reached on a fielder's choice, Mikaelah Burkland would work a four-pitch walk to load the bases with two outs. Emily Land would step in and line a single through the left side to score Benson and get SFA on the board to cut the Sugar Bears lead down to 5-1. However, the Sugar Bears would get the final out and close out the win on their home turf to complete day one of the Central Arkansas Invite.
The Lumberjacks bats were active once again as they tallied seven hits for the second time in their last three games, with Chloe Reneau (2-3) and Emily Land (2-3, RBI) leading the way with a pair of base hits each. In addition to Reneau and Land, Lexi Benson (1-1, R), Alexis Telford (1-3), and Kelby Robbins (1-3) all recorded hits for SFA, while both Ellie Vance (0-0, BB) and Mikaelah Burkland (0-1, BB) both worked walks for the 'Jacks.
Brooke Gainous pitched 4.1 innings for SFA striking out four batters, while inducing seven groundouts and two flyouts from the Sugar Bears. Delilah Robles pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the 'Jacks, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Alexis Telford led the defensive effort as she drew the start at first base and led the team in putouts with eight on the game. Emily Land finished second on the team with five putouts, and the dynamic outfield trio of Mallory Webb, Mikaelah Burkland, and Madison Nguyen combined for four putouts of their own, while Chloe Reneau led the team with four assists defensively.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow Sunday, March 10th when they get set for rematches with both the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana and Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas. The Lumberjacks will first seek revenge against the Ragin' Cajuns with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CST, before the 'Jacks finish the Invite with a second match against the Sugar Bears with first pitch of game two scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CST. There will be no stream for the game against University of Louisiana at 11:00 a.m., however, the second game against the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears will be available to stream on ESPN+.
