
Nathan Kapel Named WAC Men's Indoor T&F Freshman of the Year

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) released their 2024 WAC Indoor Track and Field major awards this afternoon. Stephen F. Austin's Nathan Kapel was named WAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year.
"Since his arrival, many things have changed for our group," said Head Coach Robert Hansen. "Nathan elevates the level of competition every day and his mindset and focus are unmatched. Nathan will be an asset for us in our WAC aspirations as well as our pursuit of national success."
The freshman from Kapenguria, Kenya received the honors after having an outstanding first collegiate season. He made an immediate impact for SFA as he broke the school record for the men's mile, in his collegiate debut. Kapel ran a record-breaking time of 4:04.42 in the mile, at the Arkansas Invitational. After his record-breaking debut, Nate was named the week one TicketSmarter WAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
He continued his dominant first year with a first-place victory in the 800m at the Robert Platt Invitational. He grabbed his second first place finish of the season, the following week in the Charlie Thomas Invitational's mile. Nathan grabbed gold with a time of 1:51.63.
Nathan broke his own school record in the men's mile at the David Hemery Invitational, with a time of 4:03.03. He ended the year by grabbing a first place (800m) and second place (mile) finish in the WAC Indoor Championships.
