BEAUMONT, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball Team (5-15, 0-0) hits the road for an in-state midweek matchup with the Lamar University Cardinals (11-7, 0-0), as SFA looks to snap a three-game losing skid and get back on track offensively.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Lumberjack Softball team is back on the road following a three-game weekend series with the Houston Christian Huskies. The 'Jacks will be on the road for their next five games as following the Lamar game, SFA will travel to Conway, Arkansas to participate in the Central Arkansas Invite this weekend. The Lumberjacks will look to put their most recent series against the Huskies behind them and get back to their winning ways this week.
Madison Nguyen is the only Lumberjack to start all 20 games this season for SFA and a large reason why she continues to lock down the leadoff spot for the 'Jacks is due to her .308 batting average on the season. Nguyen's 20 hits and 20 total bases this season lead all Lumberjacks, while she has driven in 10 runners, and is a perfect 2-2 on stolen bases. Mikaelah Burkland has crushed two homeruns this season SFA, while driving in six runners which is tied with Lexi Benson for second most on the team. As a result of the power she has displayed this season, Burkland leads the team in slugging percentage with her .412 slugging percentage, while Amiah Galcatcher leads all eligible SFA hitters, who have played 75% of games this season, in OPS with a .742 mark for the season. Lexi Benson has showed incredible patience at the plate as she has drawn a team-high nine walks while hitting her team-leading third double in SFA's game on Sunday.
The Lumberjacks three-headed pitching monster continues to keep opposing offenses at bay. Aydenne Brown continues her stellar season in the circle for SFA as she has posted a team-low 2.53 era on the season, starting in seven games and throwing three complete games, while limiting opposing hitters to a mere .200 batting average against this season as she continues to establish herself as the "ace" of a loaded pitching staff. Brooke Gainous has returned her usual dominant self as she has allowed just one run over her last nine innings pitched, which lowered her season era to a sparkling 2.63 mark, while displaying excellent control on the mound as she has allowed just four walks this season. Alexis Telford continues to be a workhorse on the bump for the Lumberjacks as she has thrown a team-high 50.2 innings, striking out a team-leading 33 batters, and pitching to the tune of a 3.45 era on the campaign. Telford offers more than just her pitching as she can seamlessly be entered into first base by Coach Jackson as evidenced by her perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 12 putouts and 12 assists on the season.
Alex Dubose and Lexi Benson lead the defensive effort for SFA this season as both have 50 putouts this season, while Chloe Reneau and Ellie Vance have formed a dynamic duo as both have 25 assists this season. Meanwhile Brittany Coe, Madison Nguyen, and Arwin Callaway all have at least 10 putouts while owning a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on the year.
Cardinals at a Glance:
The Lamar University Cardinals will close out a seven-game home series that has seen them go a flawless 6-1 on their home turf. The Cardinals were on an eight-game win streak heading into Sunday's series finale against Penn, however, the Quakers avoided the sweep by defeating the Cardinals 7-5 thanks to six runs in the first two innings and snapped the Cardinals win-streak. The Cardinals have faced a variety of teams this season in a schedule that has included a match-up with no. 1 ranked Oklahoma in the Cowgirl Challenge with the Sooners grabbing an 8-0 win.
The Cardinals lineup features no shortage of offense as five different players have a batting average over .300 for the season. Shenita Tucker leads the offensive charge with her .404 average and stealing a team-leading 13 bases this season. Trinity Brandon is a do-it-all hitter for Lamar as she is slashing a .380/1.116/.680 slash line this season while knocking a team-high two homeruns and recording 10 RBIs. Cameron Niedenthal has formed a nice compliment to Tucker as she has driven in a team-high 12 runners this season, while Kalyn Xayaseng has drawn nine free passes on the year.
Emma Wardlaw and Karyana Mitchell have formed a dynamic duo in the circle for the Cardinals this season as both have an era under 2.00. Wardlaw leads the team with her 1.49 era this season, throwing a team-high 47 innings, and striking out 36 hitters while issuing just two walks. Mitchell has been equally dominant this season as she has a 1.96 era and owns a perfect 4-0 record this season striking out 23 batters over 25 innings, while only walking five this season. Veronica Harrison has been busy on the defensive side of the ball for Lamar this season as she leads the team with 144 putouts, while Trinity Brandon leads with 50 assists.
Series: These two schools will meet for the eighth straight season as SFA has won 21 of the 30 meetings between the two programs. The Lumberjacks have won five of the last six meetings, with the most recent game seeing SFA and Lamar split a doubleheader with SFA winning the nightcap 6-4 over the Cardinals at the SFA Softball Field.
