BEAUMONT, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (5-16, 0-0) lost a midweek heartbreaker to the Lamar University Cardinals (12-7, 0-0) as the Cardinals defended their home field with a 4-3 win.
The Lumberjacks pitted Aydenne Brown against Karyana Mitchell for this single-game midweek matchup and it proved to be another nail-biting game for SFA as neither team was able to score in the first two innings. The Cardinals would get on the board first in the bottom of the third, however, the Lumberjacks would respond instantly in the top of the fourth thanks to Lexi Benson's second triple of the season, with Benson later scoring on an Emily Land RBI groundout. The Cardinals would score three runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim a 4-1 lead, but the Lumberjacks would refuse to go down that easily as they scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the Cardinals lead down to 4-3. The scoring in the top of the fifth saw Madison Nguyen kick off the inning with a one out single, which was followed by Ellie Vance reaching base to put runners on first and second for SFA. Lexi Benson stepped in with a pair of runners aboard and took full advantage of the opportunity as she sent a lined shot down the right field line just inside the first base bag, to score both Vance and Nguyen and give Benson her second triple of the game and third of the season. The Lumberjacks would fight until their last out as they have all season long, but fell just short of a come-from-behind win, falling 4-3 in a heartbreaker in Beaumont.
The Lumberjack offense came out swinging tonight and it showed up in the box score as they recorded seven hits and three runs, out hitting Lamar 7-4 on the night. Lexi Benson led the offensive charge as she stuffed the statsheet going a perfect 3-3 from the plate with her pair of triples, driving in two runs, and scoring a run. In addition to Benson, Kelby Robbins, Ellie Vance, Madison Nguyen, and Mallory Webb all recorded solid base knocks on the evening, while Nguyen and Vance also scored for SFA.
Defensively, Emily Land led the team with five putouts for the game, however, Land's biggest defensive contribution was not something you will see in the box score. With one out and runners on first and second Veronica Harrison tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners for Lamar, however, Harrison popped her bunt up in foul territory, and Land showcased her reaction time as she leapt out of her catcher's stance immediately and laid out for a full extension snag in foul territory to make one of the most athletic plays you will see from a catcher this season. Mallory Webb continued her fantastic defensive season as she added three more putouts to her season total, while Ellie Vance, Arwin Callaway, and Alex Dubose teamed up to make a nice defensive trio as each finished with a pair of putouts. Chloe Reneau was just as active defensively as she pitched in four assists defensively for SFA along with one putout, forming a nice compliment in SFA's defense tonight.
Aydenne Brown drew the start in the circle for SFA tonight, while entering tonight on just two days of rest and pitched four innings forcing 10 flyouts and one groundout from the Cardinals hitters, helping to limit damage from a dangerous Cardinals lineup. Kayla Palomino came in to relieve Brown in the fifth inning, and pitched two near-perfect innings as she allowed just one runner to reach base for Lamar over the final two innings while inducing four groundouts and one flyout.
The Lumberjacks will continue their five-game roadtrip this weekend as they travel to Conway, Arkansas to participate in the Central Arkansas Invite with SFA squaring off with both University of Louisiana and University of Central Arkansas over the weekend. The Lumberjacks start the invite with a Saturday doubleheader, first a matchup with the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana at 11:00 a.m. CST, and finishing the first day against the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears with first pitch of the second game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CST on Friday the 9th
