‘Jacks Fall to Cougars
3/20/2024 8:34:00 PM | Softball
The Houston Cougars opened up the game with a three-run first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Houston would not be able to keep SFA off the scoreboard long, however, as in the bottom of the second, Ellie Vance would send a rocket back up the middle to score Veronica Cully from second and cut the Cougars lead to 3-1 after the second. The Cougars added on nine runs in the top of the third to take a 12-1 lead, however, the 'Jacks would respond again in the bottom half of the third as Mallory Webb would send a comebacker back up the middle to score Arwin Calaway from second for the 'Jacks second run of the game. The Cougars would tack on three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 15-2 lead after three and a half innings.
SFA would continue to fight though, as they would load the bases in the bottom of the fourth as Ellie Vance would single to lead off the inning, followed by a walk from Arwin Callaway, and Kaylee Paul reaching on a fielder's choice to bring Hope Lusk to the plate with the bases juiced. Lusk would take full advantage of the opportunity as she would send a double down the left field line just inside the third-base bag for a bases clearing double, which cut the Houston lead to 15-5 heading to the fifth. The Cougars would add on a couple more runs to close out scoring for this one as they came away with a 17-5 win.
Despite the loss, it was another strong showing from the Lumberjack offense as seven different players recorded a hit tonight and they finished with eight hits as a team, while three different players recorded an RBI for SFA. Ellie Vance (2-2, R, RBI) led the way offensively for SFA while extending her hitting streak to three games, while Mallory Webb (1-2, RBI) occupying the leadoff spot today joined Vance in the RBI department, while extending her own hitting streak to three games. Brittany Coe (1-3, 2B) hit a towering double to center field for her third double this season, while Hope Lusk (1-1, 2B, 3 RBI) hit her first double of the season on her bases clearing double in the fourth. Joining Vance, Webb, Coe, and Lusk in the hitting department was Lexi Benson (1-2), Madison Nguyen (1-2), and Kelby Robbins (1-2). Robbins has now reached base safely in five of her last six, while Madison Nguyen, Brittany Coe, and Lexi Benson have all recorded a hit in back-to-back contests, with Benson reaching safely in three of her last four.
The Lumberjacks will stay at home for their next three games as they get set for their first home conference series this season, when they get set to host the Utah Tech Trailblazers this weekend at SFA Softball Field. The 'Jacks will open up the three-game series on Friday, March 22nd with a single game scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CST, before closing out the series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. CST, with the second game starting approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
