NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin's Softball Team (8-22, 1-2) open up a four-game homestand when they get set to host the University of Houston Cougars (18-9, 2-4) in a midweek match-up at SFA Softball Field.
Last Series at a Glance for SFA:
The Lumberjacks opened up conference play last weekend as they traveled to Utah to square off with the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds. Despite losing two of three games to the Thunderbirds, the Lumberjacks played competitively the entire series as they lost by a combined two runs between the two losses, before ending the series on an offensive explosion that saw them record a season-high 15 hits which they turned into seven runs in a commanding 7-2 series finale victory.
Bringing the Boom to the Ballpark:
Over the three-game weekend series against Southern Utah, the Lumberjacks combined for 23 hits over the weekend, scoring nine runs, while drawing nine walks, as they continue to find ways to create traffic on the basepaths recently. The Lumberjacks brought a solid balance of power and contact to the ballpark this weekend as the Lumberjacks finished the weekend with eight extra base hits, and 15 singles. The Lumberjacks extra base party this weekend saw them tally five doubles, one triple, and two homeruns. Emily Land and Amiah Galcatcher formed a potent hitting duo over the weekend as both recorded a pair of doubles each, while Kelby Robbins hit her third double this season. Lexi Benson hit her fifth triple of the season, good for second most in the nation currently, while Alexis Telford and Ellie Vance, who hit an inside-the-park homerun on Sunday, both recorded their first homeruns of the campaign in the series finale. The series finale saw a pair of impressive hitting performances from both Alexis Telford and Chloe Reneau who stuffed the statsheet in the win. Telford finished Sunday 3-4 from the plate with a run, and three RBIs, along with her first homerun of the season, while Reneau was equally impressive as she went 3-5 from the dish with two runs scored, and added a stolen base to her afternoon.
There's No Place Like Home:
The Lumberjacks have enjoyed hitting inside the friendly confines of SFA Softball Field this season and will look to replicate the result from their last home series when they hosted the Texas Southern Tigers. In their last home series against the Tigers, the 'Jacks swept a midweek doubleheader in dominating fashion as they combined for 15 runs, 17 hits, and seven walks between the two games. So far this season at home, the 'Jacks carry a 4-5 overall record and have recorded two games with double-digit runs. Six of the nine home games this season have seen SFA record at least six hits, while they have recorded at least one walk in all nine games. As impressive as the SFA offense has been at home, the SFA pitching staff has been right at home for the 'Jacks as well as they have allowed just 20 runs in nine home games, and have allowed just six runs in their last five home games making life difficult for opposing hitters at home recently.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
Mallory Webb was a catcher's worst nightmare this past weekend as she stole three bases over the final two games, moving her season total to a team-leading five stolen bases this year. However, Webb is far from the only Lumberjack who has unmatched speed on the basepaths as seven different SFA players have recorded at least one stolen base this season as well. Ellie Vance and Madison Nguyen have formed a near unstoppable duo on the basepaths as they both have four stolen bases so far, while Kaylee Paul has been a headache for opposing defenses as she is a perfect 3-3 on stolen bases this season. Chloe Reneau should not be forgotten on the basepaths this season as she has swiped a pair of bases, while Brittany Coe, Lexi Benson, and Ja'Aira Fletcher are not to be overlooked as each also has a stolen base this season.
10's Across the Board:
Lexi Benson, Madison Nguyen, and Emily Land have formed quite the clutch hitting trio for SFA this season. All three hitters are currently tied for the team lead in RBIs this season as they all have 10 RBIs on the campaign. Despite the fact all three have the same number of RBIs, the way all three have gotten their RBIs has varied greatly this season. Nguyen, locking down the leadoff spot, has gotten hers through RBI singles, Land has been hitting plenty of RBI doubles this season as she leads the team with five this season, while Benson has gone triple crazy this season with her team-leading five triples to help her drive in her fair share of RBIs. As a result of all their hitting, all three have also been racking up the total bases this season as each one has over 20 total bases this season.
SFA's Shutdown Staff:
The Lumberjack pitching staff continues to pitch consistently solid games for the 'Jacks that keeps SFA in any game no matter the opponent, as all three starters for SFA continue to keep opposing offenses at bay. Aydenne Brown continues to solidify her "ace" status of the rotation as she was recently named WAC Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. Over two games pitched last week, Brown pitched 14 innings, allowing just three runs, while striking out 18 batters, and claiming a win in both starts. As a result of her stellar week on the mound, Brown lowered her season era to 3.14 this season, while she leads the team in both innings pitched (61.2), and strikeouts (49), while limiting hitters to a gaudy .197 batting average this season. Brooke Gainous has been just as pesky lately as she has allowed just one run over her last 9.1 innings pitched, which has lowered her season era to 3.42. A large reason for Gainous's success on the mound this season has been her unparalleled control as she has walked just seven batters on the year. Alexis Telford continues to be a dual-threat for SFA as she has pitched in 62 innings this season, while striking out 40 hitters, and throwing five complete games in addition to being able to play first base for the 'Jacks.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Kelby Robbins continues to be a consistent threat in the SFA lineup as she leads all qualified SFA hitters with her .297 batting average this season, while she has reached base safely in four of her last five games. Amiah Galcatcher has been on a hitting tear for SFA lately as she will carry a three-game hitting streak into this midweek match against Houston that has seen her hit a double in three consecutive games, while driving in a pair of runners during that stretch. Ellie Vance, fresh off her first homerun of the season, has recorded a hit in back-to-back games for SFA. Emily Land continues to be a valuable bat in the SFA lineup as she is currently slashing .362/.848/.468 on the season, while recording a double in three of her last four games. Meanwhile, Chloe Reneau and Mallory Webb continue to form a dynamic duo when it comes to getting on-base as both have showcased some incredible patience lately. Reneau has drawn three walks in her last four games, and has reached base safely in four of her last five games, while Webb has been equally patient as she has drawn a walk in five of her last six games, and has now reached base safely in six of her last seven games.
Cougars at a Glance:
The Houston University Cougars are led by Head Coach Kristin Vesely who is entering her sixth season leading the Cougars Softball program. In four of her first five seasons with Houston, Vesely has led the Cougars to a winning season while accumulating 157 wins over her six-year career so far. On the season, the Cougars will carry an 18-9 overall record, including a win over previously ranked no. 1 University of Texas, and a 5-4 away record into SFA Softball field, as the Cougars will come to the Pineywoods fresh off a 10-2 win over Iowa State.
Kennedy Thomas and Shelby Smith have formed a potent hitting duo for the Cougars this season as both currently hit over .400 for the season while combining for two homeruns, and 36 RBis on the year. Lair Beautae and Turiya Coleman have led the homerun effort for Houston this season as both have hit six long balls this season, to help lead a Cougar lineup that has seen eight different players hit a homerun on the campaign. Bree Cantu leads the team with 21 walks, while Kennedy Thomas leads the team with nine stolen bases this season.
Paris Lehman leads the Cougars with her 4.40 era this season, throwing two complete games and recording two saves. Shelby Smith has been the workhorse of the Houston rotation as she has thrown a team-high 67.2 innings with 31 strikeouts this season and has recorded nine wins. Tamya Waiters rounds out the rotation for Houston as she has drawn 14 starts this season striking out 13 hitters and compiling a 3-3 record on the year.
It's Been Awhile Since We've Hosted:
Wednesday's midweek game will feature the 14th time these two schools have squared off with each other, with Houston leading the series 9-4 so far. These two teams met twice last season, with the two schools splitting a doubleheader in Houston, however, this will be the first time the Cougars have come to Nacogdoches since 2017 as SFA looks to defend their homefield with an upset of the Cougars.
