
SFA Loses Third Straight after 69-49 Loss to Redhawks

SEATTLE, Washington- Stephen F. Austin dropped their first game of a four-game road trip, losing 69-49 to the Seattle Redhawks. SFA fell to 14-12 overall and 7-8 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Seattle University Redhawks improved to 17-10 overall and 10-6 in WAC play.
The Lumberjacks failed to post 30 points in either half of their 69-49 loss to the Redhawks. Seattle had two scorers finish with at least 15 points. Jalil Beaubrun was the lone Lumberjack in double figures with his 13 points.
SFA's offense got off to a hot start as they took an early 5-0 lead in the first minute of play. The Redhawks went on an 13-0 run of their own to take an 13-5 lead over the Lumberjacks. After going on almost a three-minute drought, the Lumberjacks found themselves in a 21-14 deficit with 5:40 remaining in the first half.
Both teams struggled to find much offensive rhythm through the final eight minutes of the first half as the Lumberjacks and Redhawks combined for 25 points. SFA's final five points before halftime came at the free throw line.
After twenty minutes of play Matt Hayman was the Lumberjack's leading scorer. He had six points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field and 1-for-2 shooting from the three-point line. Hayman also added two steals and three rebounds to his halftime total.
SFA entered halftime shooting 8-for-27 (29.6%) from the field, 2-for-6 (33.3%) from the three-point line and turned the ball over eight times. The Lumberjack defense forced six turnovers and was led by Hayman's two steals.
The bulk of Seattle's scoring came from Cameron Tyson. He posted 15 points on 5-for-9 from the field, 2-for-4 from the three-point line. The Redhawks shot 11-for-24 (45.8%) from the field and 2-for-8 (25.0%) from the three-point line.
SFA's stagnant offense carried into the second half as they were held scoreless until the 17:49 mark. The Lumberjack defense held strong as the Redhawks were held to only 16 second half points, until the 5:55 mark. A 7-0 Seattle run led to the Lumberjacks falling into a 58-43 deficit. SFA failed to rally and ended up losing by 20 as the Redhawks won 69-49.
The 'Jacks finished 15-for-54 (27.8%) from the field and 3-for-15 (20.0%) from the three-point line. Jalil Beaubrun was SFA's only scorer in double figures. He finished with 13 points and shot 5-for-9 from the field. Matt Hayman led SFA's defense with two steals. The 'Jacks forced 15 turnovers and had nine steals.
SFA will travel from Seattle, Washington to Orem, Utah where they will face the Utah Valley Wolverines. In their first WAC game this season (2/1/24), SFA grabbed a 77-72 win at home.
