
SFA Splits Regular Season Series with 71-62 Loss to UVU

OREM, Utah- Stephen F. Austin continued their four-game stretch on the road, with their second matchup of the year against the Wolverines. SFA dropped their fourth straight game as they lost 71-62 to UVU. The Lumberjacks fell to 14-13 overall and 7-9 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Wolverines improved to 14-14 overall and 9-8 in WAC play.
The Wolverines opened the game on an 11-3 run through the 16:00 mark in the first half. Nana Antwi-Boasiako was the Lumberjack's leading scorer early on as he had SFA's first five points. After finding themselves in a deep hole, Jalil Beabrun sunk a three-point shot to pull the 'Jacks to a 21-18 deficit.
Utah Valley closed the first half out on a 14-4 run to grab a 37-24 lead over Stephen F. Austin. SFA entered halftime shooting 9-for-27 (33.3%) from the field and 4-for-12 (33.3%) from the three-point line. Utah Valley shot 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the field and 4-for-9 (44.4%) from the three-point line.
Jalil Beaubrun led the first half scoring for SFA with his eight points on 3-for-4 shooting. Caleb Stone-Carrawell was the Wolverine's leading scorer with his nine points on 3-for-4 shooting. SFA's defense was led by Matt Hayman's two steals. The Lumberjacks forced nine turnovers but turned the ball over 11 times themselves.
SFA's offense found success down in the paint early in the second half. Six of their first seven field goals came from underneath the basket. Nana Antwi-Boasiako pulled the 'Jacks to within nine with his third three-pointer of the day.
At the 10:00 mark of the second half SFA trailed 55-42. Latrell Jossell scored eight straight points and knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to pull SFA to a 62-54 deficit. SFA was unable to rally back and trailed the entire game.
Although the Lumberjacks outscored the Wolverines 38-33 in the second half, they were unable to pull off the comeback. SFA fell to UVU 71-62 after defeating the Wolverines earlier this year.
SFA shot 21-for-54 (38.9%) from the field and 8-for-24 (33.3%) from the three-point line. The Lumberjacks had three scorers finish in double figures. Nana Antwi-Boasiako led SFA in scoring with his 17 points on 4-for-10 shooting. Latrell Jossell (16) and Jalil Beaubrun (12) also posted double-digit scoring.
Utah Valley's scoring was led by Ethan Potter's 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field. The Wolverines also shot 28-for-48 (58.3%) from the field and 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the three-point line.
The Lumberjack defense forced 18 turnovers and had 12 steals. SFA had five defenders finish with atleast two steals. Stephen F. Austin also posted five blocks and was led by Matt Hayman's two blocks.
The Lumberjacks will continue their four-game stretch on the road against California Baptist on February 29th. Tip-off is set for 9:00 p.m. CT. SFA will then wrap up their road trip with a showdown against the WAC leading Grand Canyon Lopes. The Lumberjacks last two games of the season will be at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
