
Ladyjacks Secure 20th Win of the Season at Home Against Nicholls

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team (20-7, 12-2 SLC) looked to secure their third 20-plus win season in a row in their final home game of the 2024 season against the Nicholls Colonels (7-18, 2-12 SLC).
Nicholls recorded the first kill of the match, but SFA responded by rattling off three points in a row, 3-1. Later the 'Jacks went on a four-point spurt that doubled the SFA lead, 8-4. Nicholls recorded back-to-back points before SFA went on a 5-0 spurt that included a kill and an ace from Kennedy Jones as well as a kill from Molly Cravens and Kyanna Creecy, 13-6. Both teams traded blows until Nicholls went on a four-point spurt to cut the lead down to four, 18-14. However, the SFA offense did not take their foot off the gas as they went on a 6-0 run to set up set point at 24-14. Nicholls was able to stave it off twice, but Katherine Holtman was able to finish off the set for the 'Jacks, 25-16.
SFA jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and then both teams were successful in siding out until the Colonels until Nicholls went on a three-point run which tied the game up at seven. Both teams traded blows as neither team held more than a four-point lead until SFA slowly pulled away with a 22-17 lead late in the set. Nicholls cut the lead down to two but were unable to get closer as a kill from Jones to secure a 25-22 second set victory.
The beginning of the third set was tightly contested as the set was tied 5-5 early on. Back-to-back kills from Creecy and Cravens gave the 'Jacks a slim 8-5 lead. Nicholls scored one point before the Ladyjacks went on a five-point run to take a commanding 13-6 lead. With SFA up 20-13, Nicholls went on an eight-point tear to take a 21-20 lead. The 'Jacks were unable to recover as the Colonels finished the third set with a 25-22 set victory to send the match to a fourth set.
It was a battle in the fourth set as neither team held more than a two point lead until Nicholls went on a mini three-point run to take a 15-13 lead. However, SFA fought back with a three-point spurt of their own later in the set which put the 'Jacks up 19-18. The SFA offense got hot at the end of the set as they finished off the match on a 6-1 run and secured their 20th win of the season with a 25-20 fourth set victory.
