
Lumberjacks Head North to Face Lions

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (6-3, 4-2) will head to Commerce, Texas Saturday, November 9th for a game against the newly named East Texas A&M Lions (1-8, 1-3) in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 3:30 P.M.
Series History
Saturday will be the 59th meeting between the Lumberjacks and Lions with East Texas A&M holding a 43-14-1 series lead over SFA. SFA has been the winner of the last three meetings. The series dates back to 1924 in a 12-2 victory for the Lions. The most recent game came on September 30th, 2023, a 56-27 Lumberjacks home win.
Colby Carthel's Return
Lumberjacks head coach Colby Carthel led the Texas A&M Commerce Lions football program for six seasons as HC (2013-2018). Under his leadership, the Lions were 59-18 (.766) overall and 36-8 (.818) in conference play. During his tenure at A&M, he won three Southland Conference Championships (2014,15, 16), and Regional and National Championships in 2017. He was named the 2018 LSC Coach of the Year. Last year in, Carthel's first game against the Lions since joining the Lumberjacks in 2019, SFA won 56-27 in Nacogdoches. This will be Carthel's first game at Commerce/East Texas A&M since joining the Lumberjacks in 2019.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks picked up a win over Nicholls State last weekend in Thibodaux, Louisiana by a final score of 28-12 snapping a four-game losing skid to the Colonels.
Even though the offense struggled to find their rhythm through the first quarter and into the second, the quick strike offense would soon be put on display as Vidlak found Kylon Harris for a 28-yard passing touchdown to put the 'Jacks up 7-6. The offense would then break off 21 unanswered points to take a commanding 28-6 lead. The defense would stand tall throughout the game only allowing 12 points.
Sam Vidlak led the offense going 14-for-25 with 262 passing yards and four touchdowns. Jerrell Wimbley led the rushing attack with eight rushes for 47 yards. Kylon Harris had another big game with six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Clayton Wayland caught his third touchdown pass in two games to contribute to the scoring for the 'Jacks.
The defense was stout against Nicholls collecting five turnovers with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Jaheim Mullen led the defense with nine total tackles and had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Kaiden Turner had two tackles for loss and two sacks in the game. Charles Demmings had an outstanding game with four tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, and four pass breakups.
A Look at East Texas A&M
The Lions are coming off a loss to McNeese last Saturday by a final score of 31-3.
Ron Peace led the passing attack for the Lions going 10-for-23 with 138 yards passing. KJ Shankle led the rushing attack with 12 carries for 25 yards. Christian Jourdain was the top receiver for the Lions with three catches for 42 yards. Brandon Tucker Jr. led the Lions on defense with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack.
