Jayme Bailey Scores the Golden Goal to Send the ‘Jacks to the SLC Championship Game
11/7/2024 9:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- The no. one seeded Stephen F. Austin soccer team (13-3-2, 8-2-0 SLC) faced off against the no. four seeded Northwestern State Lady Demons (11-8-2, 6-3-1 SLC) for the second time in two weeks.
The rematch of the regular season championship game did not disappoint as both teams were deadlocked in a defensive battle with the score tied 0-0 at halftime. SFA ended the first half with five shots and NSU only recorded one. Neither team would give an inch as the defenses continued to stand tall in the second half. There was a renewed sense of urgency from both teams as five shots were recorded in the last ten minutes. However, none of those shots found the back of the net and we headed to overtime.
With the first shot of the overtime period, Isabella Queneau of the Lady Demons sent a shot toward the upper middle of the goal but Sierra McCluer jumped up and pushed that ball out of harm's way and kept the game knotted at 0-0. With 1:30 left in the first overtime period, Maddie Bowers drove the ball up the middle of the field and passed it to Jayme Bailey on the right side who worked her way around a defender and sailed a shot to the upper left corner past the outstretched arm of the NSU keeper for the golden goal to send the 'Jacks to the championship match.
Top Players of the Match:
• Jayme Bailey: one goal (20th career goal), fourth game-winning-goal this season, three shots
• Maddie Bowers: one assist (16th career assist), four shots (led team)
• Ella Morgan: 99 minutes played (tied team lead), one shot
SFA will play in the championship match on Sunday, November 10th at 1:05 p.m. against the no. three seeded East Texas A&M.
