HAMMOND, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Volleyball Team (22-7, 14-2) will travel to Louisiana for a first-round match against Houston Christian University (11-16, 6-5) to start the Southland Conference Tournament.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
SFA will enter the tournament after a four-game hot streak that saw them finish runner-up in the conference standings. Last weekend, they traveled to Louisiana to play against Nicholls and McNeese for the second time in two weeks. They swept Nicholls on Thursday and only dropped a set to McNeese on Saturday. After a successful weekend in Louisiana, the Ladyjacks will return to Louisiana, hoping for more success in the conference tournament.
Huskies at a Glance:
HCU will be hungry for a win after getting swept in the last two games in the conference, losing to Texas A&M- Corpus Christi on Thursday, November 14th, and UTRGV on Saturday, November 16th. Despite losing to the Ladyjacks earlier in the conference, they are fighting to stay alive.
Scouting Report:
The Ladyjacks will enter the tournament as the third-ranked team. With the conference coming to a close, awards were announced this week. Katherine Holtman was awarded freshman of the year and first-team all-conference after leading the team with 268 kills and 73 blocks this season just as a freshman has become a major asset to this team and will be bringing that same fire to the tournament. Along with Holtman, Izabella Ortiz and Kyanna Creecy were named First-team All-Conference. Ortiz continues to make an impact here at SFA, hitting a .476 this season, setting a career-high of 20 kills against
UIW, and recording 84 blocks. Creecy had an outstanding sophomore season, setting a school record by going 11-11 against New Orleans. It was a perfect game. She ended the conference season with 73 blocks, including a career-high against UIW, nine blocks.
HCU will enter the tournament as the sixth-ranked team after finishing 8-8 in the conference. Audrey Pearce, a middle blocker for the Huskies, will be a big component in this game after she was named first-team all-conference and achieved 120 blocks. Emerald Jacobs will be a strong option for HCU. She was named second-team all-conference and had impressive numbers on the season: 3.58 kills per set and 14 games with double-digit kills. Tatiana Evans is an important element in the back row, this season, she totaled 417 digs, averaging 3.86 digs per set.
Series:
Since 1988, the Ladyjacks and Huskies have matched up 19 times. SFA holds a record of 13-6 over HCU, including their sweep from earlier this season.
