COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin women's cross-country team wrapped up their 2024 season today finishing 17th out of 29 teams competing in the NCAA South Central Regional.
Mercy Kipchumba was the top individual finisher for the Ladyjacks coming in 7th place. Mercy missed qualifying for the NCAA National Championship meet by just 0.3 seconds. Mercy also set a new women's 6k record with a time of 19:32.5 crushing the previous mark of 20:24. Mercy's top 25 finish also earned her All-Region honors.
"Mercy led the way to the highest individual performance in regionals history for a Ladyjack," said Head Coach Rob Hansen. "She crushed the school record. It was outstanding. To miss the auto qualifier by 0.3 seconds is heartbreaking, so we will wait with bated breath until the selection show on Monday at 5 pm."
Valentine Jemutai was the second-highest finisher for the Ladyjacks in 27th place with a time of 20:21 also beating the previous 6k record of 20:24. Landry Perkin finished in 144th place with a time of 22:35. Trude Lamb finished in 152nd place with a time of 22:43. Elina Bailey finished in 173rd with a time of 23:12. Graycee Wilson rounded out the field for the Ladyjacks finishing 188th with a time of 23:55.
Head Coach Rob Hansen commented on the overall team performance for the ladies saying, "Our ladies were solid. We were looking for some different things from them but overall, we were the 5th best SLC team on the course today which is an improvement over the 7th place finish two weeks ago."
