
SFA Heads East to Play Lamar in Key SLC game

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (3-2, 1-1) head East this Saturday to play the Lamar Cardinals (3-2, 0-0) in a key Southland Conference (SLC) match-up. The Lumberjacks are riding a two-game winning streak, defeating Northern Colorado and Northwestern State.
Series History
This will be the 37th meeting between the two teams with Lamar holding a 19-15-2 series lead over SFA. The Lumberjacks have won the last two meetings over the Cardinals. The series dates back to October 12th, 1923, that saw a Cardinals 10-0 victory over the Lumberjacks. The most recent meeting came on November 20th, 2021, a 42-6 Lumberjack win.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks are coming off a 59-17 victory over the Northwestern State Demons as they secured their first Southland Conference (SLC) win of 2024 and claimed the new rivalry trophy "The Chief".
The offense shined bright in the East Texas night, totaling 623 total yards of offense. Sam Vidlak made his fifth start for the Lumberjacks at quarterback. Vidlak was 23-for-29 through the air with 307 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. This was Sam's third consecutive game with 3+ passing touchdowns and his fourth overall. He also threw for a career-high 307 yards, his first 300-yard game this season. Jaylen Jenkins led the way on the ground for the Lumberjacks carrying the ball 10 times for 115 yards. The Lumberjacks season leading rusher Qualan Jones also recorded 12 carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Blaine Green led the way for the receiving corps with four catches, 100 yards and one touchdown. Kylon Harris also hauled in six catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lumberjack's defense was stout yet again forcing five turnovers. Jermaine Brown led the way for the Lumberjacks defense with nine total tackles. Brown was also honored as the Lumberjacks celebrated Cally Belcher and wore Cally's number 16 for the game. Jaheim Mullen recorded two interceptions in the game which was a career high.
Chris Campos continued his historic run setting a new record for most career PATs made. Campos topped Jordan Wiggs mark of 181 made PATs and now holds the new record with 186 made PATs. Chris needs two made field goals to surpass Dan Carpenter of Montana's (2004-07) mark of 75 career made field goals for third place all-time in the FCS for field goals made. Chris leads SFA in all three major career kicking categories, field goals made (74), PATs made (186), and points (408).
A Look at Lamar
The Cardinals come into the game off a loss to the seventh-ranked University of Central Arkansas Bears by a final score of 34-14. The Cardinals are receiving votes in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll and are ranked 22nd in the 2024 Stats Perform poll.
Robert Coleman led the way for the Cardinals on offense completing 11 passes for 112 yards. Khalan Griffin led the way on the ground for Lamar with 18 carries for 72 yards and one touchdown. Sevonne Rhea was the leading receiver with five catches for 55 yards.
Kristian Pugh was the leader on defense for Lamar with 10 tackles and one tackle for loss. Dejuan Lewis also recorded an interception and Hamilton Moore recorded a fumble recovery.
