NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Western Athletic Conference released their week one TicketSmarter WAC Men and Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week. SFA's track and field team started their season in dominant fashion, as they had two athletes named to the WAC's week one honors. Nathan Kapel and Breyunna Dowell were both named to the list.
Head Coach Robert Hansen is proud of the early standard that has been set by his athletes. "Bre and Nathan have set the standard very high," Coach Hansen said.
Nathan Kapel was named as one of the WAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Kapel made an immediate impact as a Lumberjack. The freshman from Kapenguria, Kenya, made his collegiate debut in the Arkansas Invitational and ran the current fastest mile in the WAC with a time of 4:04.42, placing seventh overall in the meet.
Kapel currently sits 24th nationally in the mile run, as he etched his name in the Stephen F. Austin history books, now holding the fastest one-mile record in the program. "Nathan came to the USA prepared, he makes my job easy!", said Coach Hansen.
The Western Athletic Conference also named Breyunna Dowell as their week one WAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week. "Bre put in so much work this fall, and Coach Glass has laid out the perfect plan for her success," said HC Hansen. She's such an impressive person."
The sophomore placed first in the Arkansas Invitational's weight throw with a mark of 17.75 meters. Dowell's throw set a new personal best and she currently sits atop the WAC in the weight throw category.
Stephen F. Austin will look to build off their strong start when they travel to the Samford Multis on January 18th. The Multis will be a two-day event hosted by Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
