Bre Dowell Finishes First in Arkansas Invitational Weight Throw
FAYETTVILLE, Arkansas- The Lumberjack Track and Field team got their season kicked off yesterday at the Arkansas Invitational. SFA got the 2024 indoor season started in historical fashion as Nathan Kapel set a school record in the one mile.
In his collegiate debut Kapel ran the one mile with a time of 4:04.42. That time placed him seventh amongst a tough field of competition. It was also a new Stephen F. Austin school record for the one mile.
"Nathan has made an immediate impact in our program. He got right in the mix and battled against some very strong veteran NCAA runners. He's going to be a force at the national level" said Head Coach Robert Hansen.
The women were headlined by Breyunna Dowell's first place finish in the weight throw. She threw a distance of 17.75m that beat a very strong field. Coach Hansen was very proud of the way Dowell battled through a tough week of practice leading up to the meet this weekend.
"This young lady is a consummate professional. She had one of her hardest practice sessions of the year on Thursday and turned around Friday and competed at her highest level, Coach Hansen said, "This is only the beginning for her".
Kira Van Den Ham also posted a notable performance with her fifth-place finish in the women's pole vault. Her height of 3.79m was a personal lifetime best.
"We still have some things to work out in terms of process and competing at our highest level, but I'm confident that we learned a lot this weekend," said Coach Hansen.
The Lumberjacks have three more opportunities to compete through the month of January. SFA will travel on January 18th to Birmingham, Alabama where they will take part in the Samford Multis.
