
Lumberjacks Host Austin Peay State University for Family Weekend

NACOGDOCHES, TX- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-1, 0-0) return home after a big road win over long-time rival Northwestern State University to face Austin Peay State University (1-2, 0-0). It is the United Athletic Conference (UAC) opener for both the Lumberjacks and Governors. The week four matchup will take place on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at Homer Bryce Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm, CT.
Matchup History:
Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the two teams in either programs history. The matchup is shaping up to be a pivotal one for both programs as both teams look to win their first conference game of the year. Both the Lumberjacks and the Governors are receiving votes to enter the FCS top 25 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and the Stats Perform Poll. The Governors were picked to finish third in the pre-season United Athletic Conference poll with the Lumberjacks picked to finish fourth.
A Look at SFA:
The Lumberjacks are coming off of a big win against long-time rival Northwestern State University last Saturday September 16, in Turpin Stadium. The 41-7 win was the most points SFA has scored against the Demons since 2016 and the 34-point spread was the largest margin of victory by SFA in the history of the series which dates back to 1923.
The offense was led by Brian Maurer who threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Maurer also accumulated 22 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in the win. Sophomore Jerrell Wimbley rushed for 122 yards making Saturday's win his second straight game rushing over 100 yards. Anthony Williams also had a huge performance for the 'Jacks offense catching two passes for 103 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.
The defense held the Demons scoreless until they scored with 14:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 'Jacks defense also forced 6 turnovers in the win to the tune of four fumbles and two interceptions. Jeremiah Walker led the defense with eight total tackles and one forced fumble. Amad Murray also recorded his second fumble recovery for a touchdown through the first three games. Jarvis Anderson recorded his first collegiate interception in the fourth quarter of the win.
Chris Campos etched his name in the SFA history book when he kicked a field goal with 23 seconds left in the second quarter to break the all-time career field goals made record with number 58 on his career.

The Governors are coming off of a 63-3 win over East Tennessee State University last Saturday. Quarterback Mike DiLiello threw for a program-record 411 yards and accounted for six touchdowns in the win. Austin Peay's rushing attack also totaled 171 yards on the ground with CJ Evans Jr. leading the way with 102 rushing yards. Jaden Barnes led the way for the receiving core totaling 121 receiving yards out of the 441 total.
The Governors defense rose to the occasion last week posting a near shutout with ETSU's only points coming off of a field goal with 12:34 remaining in the second quarter. Scott Stephen and Sheldon Arnold II both totaled 12 tackles each in the dominate performance, while Isaiah McGha had one sack and one forced fumble.
