Lumberjack Football Kicks Off 2023 Against Troy

TROY, Ala.- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will get their season started this Saturday against Troy University. The week one matchup will take place on September 2nd at 6:00 p.m. in Troy, Alabama.
Matchup History:
SFA and Troy currently sit at an even 2-2 record in the series. The Trojans were victorious in the most recent matchup (Nov. 4, 2000) winning 6-0.
The Lumberjacks found success against Troy in back-to-back years (1997-98) as they were able to string up wins of 21-14 and 20-13.
A Look at Troy:
Troy won its final 11 games of the 2022 season en route to its seventh Sun Belt Conference title and a victory over a ranked UTSA squad in the Cure Bowl. The Trojans' winning streak is second only to National Champion Georgia entering the season.
Despite the lengthy winning streak, Troy is a new-look team from the 2022 squad, especially on the defensive side of the football, the Trojans lost 224 career starts from last year's squad, including 207 from five players – Carlton Martial, KJ Robertson, Will Choloh, TJ Harris and Craig Slocum.
Troy enters the 2023 season having held eight of its last 12 opponents under the century mark in rushing; the eight sub-100-yard games ranked fourth nationally last season. New defensive coordinator Greg Gasparto has plenty of weapons on that side of the football, paced by a deep defensive line led by Javon Solomon, Luis Medina, A.J Pierce, Buddha Jones and Richard Jibunor.

SFA is coming off a successful 2022 season in which they were named Western Athletic Conference Champions. SFA defeated Abilene Christian University 24-21 to claim the WAC title. The Lumberjacks finished the season with 24 players being named to the All-Conference team.
SFA also had four players selected to the UAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Chad Aune and Keegan Holm represented SFA on the offensive side. Jeremiah Walker was the sole Lumberjack selected to the defensive team. The UAC selected Chris Campos to represent the conference as the sole kicker on the specialist team. The United Athletic Conference (UAC) Football released its 2023 Preseason Coaches Poll for the league's inaugural season with WAC Champion Stephen F. Austin claiming the number four spot.
Chris Campos was named 2023 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-American Third Team Place Kicker. Campos enters the 2023 season as one of the best PAT kickers in the nation, making 120-122 (.983) in his career. He also has 273 total points credited to him in his career. Campos is six field goals shy of tying SFA's all-time made field goals record.
Jeremiah Walker has been named as one of the 1,000 college football players to be named to the East West Shrine Bowl Watch List. Walker finished last year with 34 tackles (7th on the team) and 9 pass breakups (Led the team). He also headed into last season as a 2022 Preseason All-WAC Defense as a unanimous pick.
