NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT-Arlington defeated Stephen F. Austin 9-8 in the first matchup of the weekend series. UTA improves to 20-18 (WAC 10-6) as SFA falls to 17-18 (WAC 10-9).
The Lumberjacks had to fight from behind early in this match, as a three-run homer in the Mavericks' first at-bats gave them an early lead.
Alex Rodgers provided his first big hit of the day in the bottom of the second inning when he drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double that hit off the top of the tall center field wall. With Rodgers' big hit, it was a brand new ballgame with the score tied at three apiece.
The Lumberjacks were able to build a lead in the fourth inning and it all started when Sam Adams laid down a perfectly placed bunt that scored Cole Hill from third and allowed Adams to be safe at first. A couple of batters later, Rodgers roped his second double of the day down the left field line that rolled all the way to the wall to score two runs. Peyton Parker kept the line moving as he drove a single to left field to bring in Rodgers. From this point the Maverick pitching staff struggle to locate the strike zone as they gave the Lumberjacks three free bases with a hit batter and two walks, bringing in the fifth run of the inning and giving SFA the 8-3 lead after four innings.
The Mavericks were able to regain one of those runs in the top of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly, but the Lumberjacks still held a steady 8-4 lead.
The top of the seventh started off smoothly for the Lumberjacks as they were able to record two outs on the first two batters that came up to the plate, but it was a struggle to get that final out of the inning. Following two quick groundouts, the next two batters reached base via a hit-by-pitch and a walk. The next Maverick was able to bring one in with an RBI single, and one more scored shortly after following a wild pitch that allowed the runner from third to score. With another batter being walked, the tying run was now on first. However, the next Maverick batter did more than tie the game. A three-run homer to right center gave UTA their first lead of the game since the second inning at 9-8. UTA scored five runs in the inning off two hits.
The Maverick bullpen was able to silence the Lumberjack bats the final three innings as they were to hold SFA hitless when it mattered to win the opening game of the series. With tonight's loss, the Lumberjacks are now 0-4 in their last four conference matches.
Rodgers played a big role in tonight's offense, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and one run. Parker, Hill, and Adams all collected two hits on the night as well. Parker showed off his speed on the base paths this evening by stealing three bases tonight.
The Lumberjacks will look to bounce back tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to retie the series with the UTA Mavericks.
