A Look at the Lumberjacks
After losing the first four games of the season to Kansas State, the Lumberjacks have gone 5-3 including two wins in extra innings.
SFA is 12 games into the season and Peyton Parker has yet to show any signs of slowing down offensively. He goes into the week with a strong .418 average, 23 hits in 55 at-bats. His 23 hits are the sixth most in the nation and only sits four hits behind the nation's leader. Parker has a 1.067 OPS and is tied for the team lead of four doubles.
The Lumberjacks have gotten themselves the strongest lead-off hitter they have had in a long time in Alex Rodgers. In Rodgers' 19 hits, nine have been for extra bases. His five home runs this year makes himself the only Lumberjack to have more than two home runs. Rodgers leads the team with 14 RBI's and 17 runs. Keep expecting big things from the 'Jacks lead-off hitter.
A Look at the Panthers
The Panthers have yet to find the bright side of the 2023 season as they are 2-10 coming into the match. They are coming off a three-game series to Tarleton in which they lost each game by more than 10 runs.
Alex Martinez leads the offense for Prairie View A&M as he has a .350 average, .861 OPS, and 10 RBI's. He's the only Panther to have double-digit RBI's and is one of two players to record a home run for the Panthers so far.
The 'Jacks need to watch out for Garrison Weiss when he's on the base paths. The speedster is 4-for-5 on stolen base attempts and is only one of two Panthers to have hit a triple.
It's safe to say the Panther pitching rotation has struggled some to start off the season. Out of their three main starters, Victor Mendoza has the lowest ERA of 4.61. However, Mendoza's nine walks has bumped his WHIP to 1.83, the highest of the Panther starters.
A Look at the Wildcats
The Wildcats, on the other hand, have been off to a hot start, winning 10 out of their first 13 games. They most notably took a win from Oklahoma 4-3 in extra innings.
Logan Britt has had the hottest bat for the Wildcats, carrying a .420 batting average, 1.075 OPS, two doubles, two triples, and two home runs, 12 runs, and 10 RBI's. He also has the fastest set of legs on the team as he records seven stolen bases on eight attempts.
Three other Wildcats have an average better than .300 and the team combines for a .301 average. Four Wildcats have double-digit RBI's so far and there have been 12 ACU home runs.
Tyler Morgan has been dominant on the mound for the Wildcats. In the three games Morgan has started, he has recorded a 2.50 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP. Morgan has only allowed eight hits, five earned runs, six walks, only two extra base hits, and has struck out 24 batters.
Last Match Against the Panthers: The Lumberjack Bats Light Up Prairie View A&M to Secure their First win of the Season (2/21/23)
Stephen F. Austin defeated Prairie View A&M University 11-1 to get their first win of the 2023 season. SFA improves to 1-4 while the Panthers fall to 1-3.
The first half of the game saw an intense pitching duel as there was only one combined hit through four total innings. Conner Woods carried the way early for the Lumberjacks by going 4.1 innings on the bump and only allowing one run off of one hit, picking up five strikeouts along the way.
The scoring finally started in the top of the fifth when the Panthers picked up their only run of the day by scoring on a bases-load hit by pitch. The Lumberjacks started heating up the bats in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a Tom Biggs double. Following a walk, Cody Fleischer put the 'Jacks on the board with a two-run double to right field. A couple of batters of later, Alex Rodgers drove in Fleischer with a RBI single. Cal Martin then joined the party by driving in two more runs with another single. After five innings of play, the Lumberjacks led 5-1.
Rodgers kept his bat hot and recorded another RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. After stealing second base, Rodgers then scored on a groundout to second base by Clayton Loranger. The scoring continued to the eighth inning when Scout Sanders launched a triple to left center field which brought in Sam Adams and Cole Hill. Loranger then singled to right field to bring in Sanders and his second RBI of the day. Alex Gomez drove in the final Lumberjack run of the day with a double to right center and the 'Jacks went into the final inning with an 11-1 lead.
Skyler Jaco went the final three innings on the mound for the 'Jacks and struck out the side in the top of the ninth to close out the game and give the Lumberjacks their first win of the season.
Rodgers had a big play at the plate today, going 2-for-4 with two RBI's, three runs, and a walk. Loranger, Martin, Fleischer, and Sanders all picked up two RBI's on the night as well.
