NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team prepares to take on the California Baptist Lancers for their first WAC games of the 2023 season at Jaycees Field. This will be the first ever meeting between the SFA and CBU ball clubs.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks will look to turn things around against CBU as they ride into the series on a four-game losing streak. SFA is also looking for their first WAC win of the season after getting swept in three games in their first WAC series against Abilene Christian this past weekend.
SFA continues to have one of the most powerful 1-2-3 hitters in the conference in Alex Rodgers, Clayton Loranger, and Peyton Parker. The three of them combine for a .363 average (78-for-215) and make up 50 of the 114 runs scored by the 'Jacks so far this season. Parker remains first in the conference in recorded hits and moves up to 11th in the country. Rodgers holds onto the top spot of number of home runs in the conference with six.
The pitching staff for the Lumberjacks has struggled as of late as they have let up seven or more runs in eight of the last nine games. The team combines for a 6.72 ERA and opposing batters record a .305 average. Joe Richter has seen the most success as a starter for the 'Jacks, recording a 4.15 ERA and allowing eight earned runs in 17.1 innings.
A Look at the Lancers
CBU heads into the weekend with an 8-8 record and a 5-6 record on the road. The Lancers have taken on some tough opponents early on in the season as they went 2-1 in a three-game series with Oklahoma and lost just 2-0 to #14 Oklahoma State. This will also be the second WAC series for the Lancers as they went 2-1 against UTRGV in their first conference series.
The Lancers know how to hit the ball into the open spots on the field as currently they have seven players with ten or more hits. The power hitters for CBU consist of Michael Carpentier and Mitchel Simon as they both have seven doubles and three home runs, both leading the team in each statistic. Carpentier and Simon are also the two team leaders in RBIs, so expect these two Lancers to put the ball in play with runners in scoring positions.
The starting rotation has also seemed to struggle for CBU as each of their three main starters carry an ERA of 4.70 or more. Liam Rocha is 2-0 as a starter so far, recording a 4.71 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in five appearances. The bright spot in the Lancer bullpen has been Jacob Wilson. Wilson has appeared in eight games and in those games, has only allowed one earned run for an ERA of 0.77 and has picked up five wins, which is the most wins by any pitcher in the nation. Batters have an average of .146 against Wilson.
