A Look at the Vaqueros
The struggling season continues for the Vaqueros as they remain near the bottom of the WAC standings at 2-8 against conference opponents and 8-13 overall. The Ladyjacks have a prime opportunity to pad their stats against UTRGV as they're 3-7 on the road this year.
Iyana Dorsey is the lead scorer for the Vaqueros, averaging 15.7 points per game. Dorsey takes half of her shots from beyond the arc, making roughly 30% of her long shots (38-for-124). Even though she likes to take shots from deep, she's been having trouble making them go in the bucket as of late, as she is 0 for her last 10 shots from the three-point line. Dorsey has only made three of her last 18 shots in the last two games. The Ladyjacks need to be careful on defense around Dorsey as she 86.2% good from the charity line (98-for-115).
One Vaquero who has found success from beyond the arc is Mele Kailahi, who is 38.8% accurate from deep (40-for-103). A little more than half of her shots come from the three-point line so the Ladyjacks need to stay sharp on defense deep in the field to keep the Vaqueros from running up the scoreboard.
Deborah Ogayemi will be a problem in the paint for the Ladyjacks as she leads the team in field goal percentage with 46.7% with majority of her shots coming inside the arc. Ogayemi averages 10.2 points per game and also leads the team with 141 total rebounds.
Last Match against UTRGV: Aiyana Johnson Records Double-Double Saturday Against UTRGV (3/5/22)
Seniors Aiyana Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double in a 76-74 loss for the SFA women's basketball team Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Johnson picked up her ninth double-double of the season in front of the Senior Day crowd. Fellow Senior Stephanie Visscher followed with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Zya Nugent added 17 points. Tasharian Robinson added 10 points.
The loss, SFA's first conference loss of the season, snapped the Ladyjacks 38-game home winning streak, the longest in the NCAA. The 'Jacks will enter next week's WAC tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning their second straight conference regular-season championship - but first in the WAC.
With the game knotted at nine with 2:32 left to play in the first quarter, the 'Jacks closed the frame with a 9-3 run to take an 18-12 lead.
UTRGV fought back and took a 32-23 lead with 4:39 left to play in the second quarter. The 'Jacks responded by cutting the lead down to two points, 33-31, with 1:18 left in the half on a Nugent jumper, but UTRGV extended the lead out to seven, 38-31, at the break.
SFA came out and tied the game at 38 on a Johnson layup with 6:46 on the clock in the third. Two minutes later, the 'Jacks held a five-point margin, 49-44, following a Visscher jumper. The two teams traded buckets until the final two minutes when UTRGV scored four of the last six points. With the game tied at 72 following a Johnson lay-in, UTRGV scored the next four points setting up the dramatic finish.
Nugent converted a layup with 14 seconds to play, and the 'Jacks defense forced a turnover giving SFA one more shot to win or force the tie. The win eluded the 'Jacks snapping the home winning streak.
